WE HAVE BREAKING NEWS! The Warriors have finally traded D’Angelo Russell. The Timberwolves pulled off the Russell deal. The full trade includes Russell, Omari Spellman, and Jacob Evans to Minnesota. In return, the Warriors will acquire Andrew Wiggins, a 2021 protected first round pick, and a 2022 second round pick. The 2021 one pick is protected 1-3 but becomes unprotected the following season.
Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN was the first to report the news:
This has to be a HUGE win for the Wolves. How did they pull this off? Karl-Anthony Towns and D’Angelo Russell have wanted to play together forever. Towns has been miserable in Minnesota. They have not won a game since November. The Timberwolves are on a crash course for a top 5 pick and the threat of KAT wanting out. Not now. They keep their face of franchise happy by snagging his friend, Dlo.
I think the Warriors sold low here. They gave up a protected first round pick and gave Russell a ton of money in the Kevin Durant sign and trade deal. To come away with Andrew Wiggins and a protected pick doesn’t make any of this feel worth it. Let’s be honest; the Wolves probably had to attach picks to get rid of the Wiggins contract.
I question the fit of Andrew Wiggins next to Steph Curry and Klay Thompson. He’s never been a knock down three-point scorer. Wiggins has shown that maybe he’s turned the corner but he’s not worth $147.7 million. I think this says a lot about D’Angelo Russell. Golden State really must not have liked him.
