Carmelo Anthony thinks that the Nuggets should retire his jersey. Why though? He didn’t have much success in Denver and his breakup with them wasn’t the best. Here is the full quote provided by NBC NBA via Jena Garcia of the CHICK n Nuggets podcast:
“This is where it should be retired, to be honest with you. Just my opinion.”
“The history is here. This is where it all started. But maybe not. The Joker’s got 15 now. We’ll see. We’ve still got time for that.”
There’s a couple of problems I have with this. Yes, his best years were in Denver. Yes, this is where his career started. BUT, as mentioned before, his breakup was ugly. He publicly asked for a trade and got what he requested. It seems ironic that he is entitled to the Nuggets to retire his jersey. Another thing, Nikola Jokic, the best player since the Carmelo Anthony years, wears 15. He deserves to wear 15 and will probably go down as the best Nuggets player ever. There’s no way that Nikola Jokic should have to change his number because Carmelo Anthony thinks he deserves it.
I find his “We’ve still got time for that” quote sooooooooo arrogant. Like I get it, he’s Carmelo Anthony, WOW, no one cares. Nikola Jokic will be a better Nugget than he ever was. There is no time for nothing. If #15 ever gets retired, it will be Nikola Jokic’s name in the rafters. If he wanted his number retired, he probably should have never been cancer or just ask the Knicks. The Knicks is his best bet, despite the fact that Melo didn’t even have much success there. Let’s face it, Carmelo wasted his career, his best chance for a great legacy was in Denver. He messed it up and now there might be no place in the rafters for Carmelo. Oh well, his loss. (Shrug)
