NBA In-Season Tournament Games Could Have Incentives

If you haven’t seen the new changes that could be coming to the NBA in the regular season or in the playoffs, I reported it here for you. One of the many changes included in that article was the NBA in-season tournament idea. There seems to be an update as the reward for winning the in-season tournament. Via Kevin O’Connor of The Ringer:

To incentivize teams, league sources told me the NBA could make each victory in the single-elimination knockout tournament worth double toward the regular-season standings, or it could eliminate the win-loss system and install a points system similar to the ones used by EPL, the World Cup, and the NHL. But it’s unclear what the incentives will be in the final proposal; virtually any idea you can imagine has been discussed and debated during meetings.

While I must admit I am ignorant of the points system used by the EPL, the World Cup, and the NHL, I could be down if it is explained well and it makes sense. While this could motivate teams to win the NBA in-season tournament, it would be hard to determine how. I’m sure it would help to incentivize teams to do well so that affects the NBA Playoffs later in the year It is just hard to figure out how.

One incentive could be that the winner has an automatic playoff berth for winning the tournament or a certain seed or higher for winning. One also has to think about how the teams would be seeded. Seeing how the tournament would be around this time or in December, that small of a sample size could cause some issues.

This is strictly my idea right off the top of my head, but have the NBA teams play each team once, such as a round-robin, and use the records for that for the seeding in the NBA in-season tournament. I’m not sure which route they will take, but I am fully intrigued by this and will be keeping an eye on the final proposal for this. Please check out the article above or the one linked for all the possible changes coming to the NBA!
