The NBA is Thinking About Changing Their Playoff Format

The NBA has had some intriguing discussions with the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) about certain playoff changes, in-season tournaments, even lowering the number of games teams will play in a season.

Most of these changes include changing the number of games from 82 to 78 games in the regular season. One of the changes that I really like is the reseeding of the 4 conference finalists. As reported by ESPN:

“The reseeding of teams in the semifinal round based on regular-season record could give the NBA a championship series that includes its best two teams. The WNBA has been seeding teams in the playoffs without regard to conference for several seasons.”

I love this idea. Not only is it just a new way for the best two teams to play in the NBA Finals, but it’s also a step towards getting rid of conferences altogether. Something I’ve been wanting for years. The Western Conference has always been harder to get into, playthrough, and win for years now. Some Western Conference teams would miss the playoffs because of the toughness of the conference, while they would have easily made the Eastern Conference. This change could be a sign of new things to come. It would be much better to have the 16 best teams from each conference in the best of 7 series. That way, 1. the best teams get in and 2. it’s more competitive to watch.

Discussions between the NBA and NBPA have also included 2 play-in postseason tournaments. From the same article linked above from ESPN:

“The play-in proposal is this: two four-team tournaments featuring the seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th seeds in each conference. The seventh seed would host the eighth seed, with the winner of that single game earning the seventh spot, league sources said. “

“The ninth seed would host the 10th seed, with the winner of that game facing the loser of the 7-vs.-8 matchup for the final playoff spot.”

I dig this idea. This is just a new thing that they are implementing to increase interest when it comes down to the last 2 teams to make the playoffs in each conference. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has been pushing for this for years supposedly.

“Commissioner Adam Silver has been driving this agenda of change — especially the in-season tournament cup modeled after European soccer — for years. “

This next idea, I am still trying to figure out. It seems quite complicated but it does have a touch of college basketball in there. This would be the idea of a in-season tournament. Reported from the same article above from ESPN:

In proposals that include the adoption of in-season tournaments and a postseason play-in, the traditional regular-season schedule would be reduced from 82 games — with most teams scheduled to play 78 or 79 games. There’s a small possibility of a team playing a maximum of 83 games based on possible tournament and play-in scenarios, league sources said. For the in-season tournament, the NBA is focused on 30-team participation that begins with a divisional group stage of scheduled regular-season games.

Those pre-knockout-round games would be part of the regular-season schedule. Six divisional winners — based on home and road records in the group stage — and the two teams with the next-best records would advance to a single-elimination knockout round, league sources said.

Those teams could each potentially compete in the quarterfinals, semifinals and finals.

It seems complicated and quite confusing honestly. But the NBA schedule is long, this could be a way to keep NBA fans interested year-long and keep ratings high. If they ever figure it out, I’m game for it.

All these changes are signs that the NBA is trying to drive for change and make the NBA better, especially with the parity in the NBA helping with that. Sure, some close-minded people and old farts will hate these ideas, because they hate change. This is a great way for the NBA to stay relevant the whole year. I love it, and I love the changes that might be coming.
