Dave Wilcox, a former American football player and member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, passed away Wednesday at the age of 80, the Pro Football Hall of Fame announced. Wilcox was born in Ontario, Oregon, in 1942, eventually playing college football at Boise State and Oregon. The San Francisco 49ers then drafted him in the third round of the 1964 NFL Draft, where he spent his entire 11-year career.
Dave Wilcox was a key member of the 49ers’ famed “Gold Rush” defense of the 1970s, one of the most dominant units in NFL history. He was a seven-time Pro Bowl selection and was named a first-team All-Pro in 1971 and 1972. Wilcox was also named to the NFL’s All-Decade Team of the 1970s and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2000.
Wilcox was known not only for his on-field contributions, but also for his character and leadership off the field. His hard work and determination earned him the respect of many different players around the league.
After retiring from football, Wilcox worked in the real estate industry and was active in charitable organizations, including the Boy Scouts of America and the Special Olympics.
The news of Dave Wilcox’s passing has been met with an outpouring of condolences and tributes from the football community. Current and former players, coaches and fans have taken to social media to share their memories of Wilcox and express their sadness at his loss.
“While Dave Wilcox was nicknamed ‘The Intimidator’ for his aggressive style of play, he was a kind, humble and gracious man in all other aspects of life,” Pro Football Hall of Fame president Jim Porter said in a statement on Wednesday. “He transformed the outside linebacker position — one of the many feats that earned him a forever home in Canton.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Dave’s wife, Merle, and their entire family. We will preserve his legacy for generations to come.”
Wilcox’s legacy as a football player and as a person will undoubtedly live on for years to come. A great player but an even better person. RIP Mr. Wilcox, and my condolences go out to your family.
