49ers Fans Want Jimmy To Be Starting QB Over First-Round Pick Trey
49ers fans would like to see Jimmy Garoppolo starting as quarterback for this upcoming 2021 season. About 8,500 fans responded to a poll asking which quarterback would fan like to see open the 2021 season between Jimmy G and Trey Lance. Nearly 68% of fans voted in favor of Jimmy Garoppolo over the first-round pick Trey Lance to be the starting quarterback for the 49ers this fall.
Jimmy Garoppolo deserves to keep his starting position this season despite the blockbuster trade for Trey Lance. During the 2018 season, the 49ers ended with a 4-12 record because Jimmy missed 13 games due to an ACL injury. The team came back in 2019 and not only beat Drew Brees and the Saints in the last 30 seconds of the fourth quarter on 4th and 2, but the underrated team ended their 2019-2020 season with a 15-4 record, became NFC West Champions and competed against the Chiefs during Super Bowl 54. Honestly, none of those accomplishments would have been possible without Jimmy Garoppolo.
When fans mention the best quarterbacks who are currently playing in the NFL, Jimmy’s name is rarely brought up. But he deserves to be mentioned in those conversations, especially after Jimmy G was ranked number one over quarterbacks Patrick Mahomes, Gardner Minshew, and Drew Brees for the highest completion rate on throws beyond 20+ yards during the 2019-2020 season.
In 2020, NFL Network analyst Bucky Brooks said “Garoppolo was the NFL’s most efficient deep passer in 2019.” This is proven with Jimmy’s 2019 completion rate of 476. While USA Today, Steve Ruiz wrote:
“That man can throw a football. “His release is Marino quick. … His mechanics are basically perfect.”

The people’s tight end George Kittle, who caught most of Garoppolo’s passes during the 2019 season, said he wants Jimmy to be his quarterback this upcoming season. He also gave his opinion on how Garoppolo should be seen within the 49ers organization.
“Jimmy is everything you want in a franchise quarterback,” Kittle said.

Jimmy should be a franchise quarterback after what he has done for the organization. Also, when he takes the 49ers at least to the playoffs this upcoming season, he should receive that title. Sadly, this won’t happen with the team drafting Trey Lance in the first round. But this further explains why Jimmy G deserves to be the starting quarterback now before his contract expires. Trey Lance is training under Jimmy to be starting quarterback one day, and his time will come after the 2021 season. But for this season, it’s Jimmy Garoppolo’s time to be starting quarterback.
