Jimmy Garoppolo has never lost a start in the NFL. After getting sent to the San Francisco 49ers acquired Jimmy G from the Pats and did not lose a start. He went 5-0 for San Fran and gave the franchise a new face to be optimistic about. Now the 49ers have secured their franchise quarterback moving forward giving him a long-term deal.
Mike Garafolo of NFL Network was the first to report the news:
The 49ers and QB Jimmy Garoppolo have agreed to a five-year, $137.5 million contract, source says. The biggest deal in NFL history on a average-per-year basis.

Now Garoppolo is the highest paid quarterback in NFL history. Now he will surpass the marks set by Derek Carr and most previously held by Matthew Stafford. To give up a 2nd-round pick to acquire the rights to Jimmy G has proved to be a huge win. San Francisco has the 2nd most cap space in the league to use this offseason so the big contract will not preclude the team from making more moves in free agency.
Garoppolo, 26, will now be under team control for five-years.
At the Senior Bowl, GM John Lynch had the following to say.
“When you find the right guy at that position, it’s really good for your franchise. We believe we’ve found the right guy. Now the challenge is getting Jimmy signed. We’re working hard towards that. We’ll see. I think he wants to be with us and we want him there. I think it makes too much sense not to happen. So it’s just a matter of getting it done.”
Garoppolo was set to hit unrestricted free agency in March. Now the team can avoid hitting the franchise tag knowing that they can focus on other needs with their signal caller locked up for the long haul. Jimmy G owns a career record of 7-0 and could have the 49ers playoff bound this upcoming season.
