FIFA is one of the biggest sports games in the world, and it has definitely become the most popular soccer title. FIFA, which is developed by Electronic Arts, had its first release in 1993 and the game’s latest release under Electronic Arts in 2021 with FIFA 22.
The duo has one more game together in FIFA 23, but after that release, the two companies will go their separate ways. This is a huge development in the sports gaming community, and specifically for soccer fans across the world. There will no doubt be changes in the soccer gaming landscape, as FIFA and EA will now be releasing separate soccer games.
One of the important questions is who will be taking over FIFA and releasing the new games? There is no confirmed company yet, but Take Two, which is the parent company of 2K Games, has shown interest in this task. Take Two boss Strauss Zelnick stated,
“We’re definitely interested in expanding our opportunities in sports, and FIFA has a great brand and incredible clout, but we have no current plans to discuss,”

This demonstrates how there are no immediate plans for FIFA, but it does open the door to a possible FIFA 2K game. 2K already has a strong foundation in the basketball world with NBA 2K, and in wrestling with WWE 2K. NBA 2K has a great ‘my career’ game mode, which could transfer over to FIFA and give the game a fantastic story mode.
It will be interesting to see what direction FIFA will go with their next game, and if a decorated company like 2K will take over.
As mentioned earlier, 2K Games has found success in other video game sports markets. 2K started making wrestling video games with Japanese developer Yuke’s in 2013 with WWE 2K14. Then 2K developer, Visual Concepts, took over full development in 2019 starting with WWE 2K20.
The WWE 2K series has continued to see praise from fans, but that is not their most popular game as 2K is best known for their NBA 2K series which has been going strong since 1999. This is the lead basketball game on the market and its influence has even grown into popular culture, with NBA players and fans referencing the game in the media.
If 2K took over the iconic soccer title, then the game would be in good hands, but there is no telling if gamers would accept it like the original EA series.
