Cam Ward had his pro day today at the University of Miami. You had dudes running around shirtless out there trying to put on a show in front of NFL scouts. I have some 2025 NFL Draft notes at your disposal. Feel free to enjoy them and comment if you have any disagreements.
Let’s start here. I watched the event on NFL Network. It took 62 full minutes to even get to anything on the field. I feel like I got conned. I could have taken a nap and instead of listening to all that nonsense from the uneducated sissies at NFL Network.
Cam Ward
First of all, you can tell he was there five hours early. One of the things I love about him is the massive chip on his shoulder. It’s more like a boulder. Guy has a full sweat going and the workout hasn’t even started yet. It was obvious without this clip but here’s the evidence anyway.
I’ll say this too. I really don’t think Ward had to prove anything here today. It was essentially just nice to see him confirm things.
First thing you notice is the ball comes out quick. Just the initial ball out of the hand, it comes out quick and with zip. He also took a lot of snaps under center, which wasn’t the case in college. No bad snaps but would have been more of a red flag if there were.
Footwork is there. Light and calm. Has a poise to him. No issue in terms of stiffness or lack of power on the back foot. Very nonchalant in the footwork. Very leisure and casual workout at the start of the workout. First seven minutes looked like warmup.
Guy looks like a shortstop. Arm angles out of control in a good way. Arm power is obvious. Ball placement was there with a jolt out of the hands. Ball placement was very, very good. The slant balls had heat on them with positive ball placement. You can tell the RPO game he’s going to thrive when called. Balls on the out route got there with plus velo.
Not all of these Pro Days look good. This was one of the better ones I’ve seen since doing this. It looks like he’s done this script 1,000 times. Serious arm talent. Doesn’t lose anything while on the move. Has torque and can open up his hips. I actually can’t recall a time the ball hit the ground more than once. Had a second miss on a fade in the red area but whatever. Everything was on the money. 90% of the throws were right on what would have been the face mask.
Lower body and upper body very connected. It doesn’t take much effort for him to really zoom balls. If he wants to, he can gear up let it rip. Pure release is elite. Pure arm juice, it’s not Josh Allen but it’s upper tier good. His ball really spins though. I’d love to know the RPM numbers of these throws. Really nice feel though on these over and corner routes down the field.
It’s really more of the same over and over again. Very consistent minus the different arm angles but they all have a method of madness to them depending on the side of the field he’s working toward. Everything really under control and the overall pace of the rep, he controlled. Not letting outside factors mechanically get in the way of being on target. Light on the feet and never quicksand moments to cause errors. Downfield accuracy was there and clearly has chemistry with the guys he’s working with. Made a lot of weird designed on the move throws part of the script to create chaos. Even caught a ball on a trick play. The back half of the workout was a lot of red area that felt experimental.
Noticed the same QB coach who trains Shedeur Sanders was running this workout. I wonder how much of this script will be the same on April 4th for the Colorado Pro Day.
Based on the camera angles, it was hard to focus in on the finite details of the pass catchers. Xavier Restrepo, Elijah Arroyo, Sam Brown, and Jacolby George were all there to catch passes from Ward. I’ll say this though. Just in terms of movement skills moving around, Restrepo and Arroyo look like damn studs. Sam Brown probably ranks last for me out of the guys catching balls but again the camera angle cheese it’s sort of hard to tell so I won’t comment further on that.
We did learn one thing though. Restrepo is officially dirt slow, which we knew was probably going to be the case but this is next level bad.
