2025 East-West Shrine Bowl Practice: Day Two West Team

NFL Conference Championship games are today so we’re skipping the intro paragraph. Nobody cares about the intro cheese anyway. There’s only thing I’ll say before we get started on the Day Two Practice West Team notes for the 2025 East-West Shrine Bowl. Keep in mind that I will go way more in depth once I actually dive through the tape version of the footage. That part is coming and the Sophie Monster is already in process of cutting up the necessary tape for that stuff. Be ready for when that drops because it’s going to be next level cheese good. Think of this post as a first reaction sort of thing with more deeper dive stuff to follow.

Quarterbacks:

If I had to rank this group from what I’ve seen I would go, Ethan Garbers, Brady Cook, then Max Brosmer.

When it comes to Brosmer, the best thing he has going for him is it doesn’t appear that he’s an idiot. He’s just not naturally talented to actually be anything NFL wise. It’s an 86 MPH turd fastball coming at you. Cooper Rush vibes of meh.

Cook didn’t kill his stock. Made a nice throw in team drills stepping up and hitting Wester down the field. Next play throws another dart to Sam Brown. Actually started opening it up and being confident that he can complete real throws. Did a really nice job climbing the pocket and being accurate. Has zero tools to be excited about but if he can keep doing these little things, maybe there is a backup role to carve out.

The gap between Garbers and Cook isn’t very big. I could even switch the order. We’ll see on that though. I really didn’t see anything wow worthy from Garbers today but you can at least tell he wants to drive the ball off the back foot and has some awareness to him. I’ll say this again but he got screwed from the whole Eric Bieniemy disaster.

Running Backs:

Corey Kiner gets killed by South Carolina trying to block. Every rep I saw he lost trying to block. Kiner is just a whole lot of meh. Has no gear and is slow to react a lot of time. It’s turd mode without the size. He’s a total zero minus being a third down back who can catch a screen. Congrats.

Tahj Brooks then gets killed by UNLV trying to block. He’s a waste of time. You’re looking for ghosts trying to convince yourself he’s good. I don’t care what his stats were. He’s not good.

I don’t know who 36 is in a white helmet but he’s new. He’s not listed on the roster. Has to be a fresh add. Unfortunately, the broadcast team is ass and they haven’t identified a single player during the entire event so I’ll get back to you once I figure out who it is.

Ja’Quindon Jackson did by far the best job trying to block. I think Jackson is the best from this group. In team drills his burst is noticeable. The hammer quality we talked about all year. It’s a load when he gets a full head of steam. Minus the fact that he kept fumbling during team drills. It was two in consecutive runs and that just can’t happen in this setting. No question his best trait is power. Use him on the goal line. QB background, which is odd because he has some underrated wiggle too.

Wide Receivers:

Ricky White keeps winning. His knee bend continues to make him interesting. He can actually bend and get his body to win. He might be actually legit. Was up and down at UNLV but he’s looking like he belongs here. Just watch the way he bends his knees. It’s a really good indicator he has the tools to make something of himself.

Think Juice Wells actually looked alright. Times in the past, just looked like he was permanently injured and couldn’t do anything. Had his fair share of reps where he actually got open and created space. Didn’t look specially slow either. Maybe he’s fresh compared to in-season but that’s part of the problem. During the gritty season, will he hold up and or play the same?

Wester continues to be a wiggle machine. Getting open won’t be his problem. It’s a matter of how good of an actually receiver beyond working some slot routes he actually is.

Mumpfield is meh. Short area stuff he’s just average. Never a wow moment. Do we think he’s better than Bub Means? Even if he marginally is… who cares?

Jacolby George making some plays in team drills. Caught nice over route. His hands should be there. Notice how it’s never Sam Brown who makes a play. Way more dependable.

Tight End:

Texas Tech tight end doesn’t impress me at all. No crazy movement skills. Couldn’t get open in team stuff and had a bad drop. Luke Lachey and Caden Prieskorn are the ones to watch in this group.

Offensive Line:

Purdue continues to hang in there. Won his first rep against the other Maryland guy. Never see an ugly rep from him. You can tell he’s not a world beater but he fights and holds his own.

Same thing from NC State. Guy just hangs in there and does his job. Never overpowered and nice base. NC State locked up West to close out the day. You can tell the coaches wanted to see that to close the day.

Hollin Pierce is a dude. You can’t get by him. Dude is taller than the Egyptian pyramids and that’s not hyperbole. He’s really that big. I don’t know how his physical tools alone don’t make you excited. Whoever his trainer is should make him do those foot speed ladder drills every single day. He’s a bit of a lump of clay right now but holy hell he really could be something.

Haven’t seen anything out of Florida to impress me. Boise State got by him in a flash. Can’t recall a time where he had a dominating rep. Especially in the MFer strength department.

Texas State guy is bad. Couldn’t block Arkansas at all. Guy is awful. Only time he wins is if it’s blatant holding.

Cincinnati less dominant today. Still good but it’s clear Rutgers is ahead of him. We’ll see but sure looks like a developmental tackle worth investigating further.

Defensive Line:

I may have been a tad harsh on CJ West. I skimmed through some of the tape from yesterday and he was better than I indicated. What I don’t take back is that his first step is not good and his initial strike of power is far from elite. He’s way too slow off the ball. He doesn’t quit though. Relentless trying to win his rep. Tries everything to get by his guy. He can win against some of the bums but the better guys at the event, it’s nothing special. Thought he had some moments in team setting too getting in the backfield.

Here’s what can’t be denied. He was the third best defensive lineman on his own team last year.

Boise State took a step forward today. Was more consistent in positive reps and spent less time on the ground. I’ll give him that. Much better today. Comes downhill with some strength and a bit spazzy but it’s something. Maybe nerves got to him yesterday because his footwork in terms of just staying on his feet was much better today.

Boston College really struggles bending. Every time he gets out of his stance he’s high. WAY too high. Pad level is a problem. I can’t see how he is an impact level guy. He would get put on rollerskates by top end guards in the league.

Jordan Phillips is legit. Big body but he’s not unathletic. Knows how to use his hands to create leverage. Really nice hand work getting around NC State. Big dude but he can shimmy and get by people. He’s a stud in this group. This dude is going to cause problems. I just like how he’s big but not clumsy. A real athlete. Genuinely might be the best guy in the entire West team.

SMU defensive tackle is a waste of time. Nothing special in him at all. Not even sure there’s average here. Boston College guy flattened him and he hasn’t been impressive at all. Cross him off your list if he’s even on it.

Finally saw some wins out of BYU. Got by Cincinnati. Later in the day he’s faceplanting. Haven’t been impressed. Not sure he’s a standup guy too like Kyle Van Noy who can use his instincts. He’s a mediocre rusher who hasn’t displayed an ounce of twitch.

I keep wanting to talk about Arkansas more but there’s never a time where it’s like holy hell.

Linebackers:

Jackson Woodard damn good. Coming downhill nobody could block him. Wins a rep against Jackson in pass coverage.

It’s Woodard and Bam Martin-Scott in this group. I haven’t seen much of Jay Higgins during drills. Maybe I’m missing something here. Memphis and South Carolina State guys might have something but don’t want to speak too soon.

I’m also not sure what’s going on here but Chazz Chambliss needs to be used in more of this pass rusher drills. He was good in that area for Georgia. Not sure why he’s not even included on that session.

Cornerbacks:

Robert Longerbeam can play. Awareness where the ball is. Knocked one free from Ricky White who has kept winning. Beat up Pitt towards the day. Totally in control and never lost separation.

It’s Nohl Williams from Cal who is grabbing out of control.

UNC guy is legit. Constantly keeps guys in the hip pocket and makes plays on the ball. Swatting machine. Never really a time someone gets away from him. Plays the ball well.

Safeties:

Shamari Simmons can’t keep up with Colorado’s Wester at all. He’s also a safety who can play the run so asking him to do that one on one is unfair. Later came up with a pick later in the day in team stuff. He’s a good player. I just wouldn’t advise making him a man corner, which is what they ask in these one on ones. Picked off Minnesota was the one who threw it.
