2025 East-West Shrine Bowl Practice: Day Three West Team

I may or may not have gotten carried away with storytime for the East team section. No need to repeat it. Just give Trey an extra click and check out this link here! Don’t think I need to say anything beyond what was already said so I’m just going to get to the 2025 East-West Shrine Bowl notes now if you don’t mind.

Okay, other than reminding you that the tape version is coming and that you should think of this post as a quick hitter first glace sort of thing. Day three west team notes coming in hot now.

Quarterbacks:

I’d still take Ethan Garbers from this group. Mechanically, he’s just doing it and not a mess. He sets his feet on every throw.

Brosmer deserves some credit. He’s a nothing burger but he cashed in on the gotta have it easy throws. He didn’t shoot himself in the foot. Light on his feet. Was accurate for the most part.

The broadcast team today was just so much better. Did a very good job reminding people that Brady Cook was banged up all year. He’s not a world beater but he might have a little more underrated zip than I gave him credit for originally.

Running Backs:

Corey Kiner doesn’t impress me at all. I have no idea what he’s good at.

Get Ja’Quindon Jackson going downhill and he will do his job. Short yardage. If you told someone he was a former quarterback, I don’t think anyone would belive you.

Wide Receivers:

Will Sheppard has some quicksand to his game. No grease lightning in his game. Just doesn’t create enough separation. He looks like Mike Evans except the Monstars from Space Jam zapped all of his talent.

Juice Wells is catching the ball. Has that going for him. He just looks so much more healthy compared to certain parts I’ve watched him in season. It’s hard to notice anything else.

Jimmy Horn has juice to his game. Guy has speed and can get open. No issues catching the ball either.

Him and Wester are about the same type of guy. Wester might have him beat in the wiggle column but Horn is probably a touch faster.

Same vibes from Mumpfield. He doesn’t suck. He’s just not elite in any way either.

Tight End:

Luke Lachey looks much better in a team setting than one on ones. He doesn’t have that same giddy up that Kittle has. I bet he doesn’t run that fast compared to some of the other Iowa tight ends.

Texas Tech guy is more of a receiver than blocker. You can see that much. Was starting to make some plays. Big body tight end but can actually move. He took a big stride forward today. By far his best day. I don’t have the stats from practice but it sure felt like he had triple the amount of catches than he had the first two days.

Offensive Line:

NC State’s Tim McKay wins first rep against CJ West. He’s been in control the whole time. Next rep he destroys Boston College. Leverage win on that one. He’s done a good job all week.

More of the same from Rutgers. Skyscraper vibes. Can’t get by him. Baylor has no chance on him. Beats SMU next rep. Nobody is burying him despite him being a bit too top heavy.

Defensive Line:

Boston College same problems as yesterday. Not it.

Jordan Phillips came to play again. Wins first rep with nice spin move to win. He’s made himself some money.

CJ West deserves credit for his hand fighting. He doesn’t quit. I don’t like his first step but he fights. Lost rep to Texas State, who hasn’t beat anybody all week. Sometimes he’s just spinning out of desperation hoping to pray something happens.

Best day by far for BYU. Beat Indiana multiple times. Finally showed some burst without falling over. Ran his feet. Thought he was a good playing actually during the year and glad to see he finally showed up.

Boise State looks better playing DT.

Linebackers:

Credit to the broadcast team. They were on it and based on what I hear today, I’m going to trust it. Just didn’t see a ton of the linebackers today. Think it was just how the practice was formatted. It is what it is. Again, I have the tape version and that information will come down the line from me.

Cornerbacks:

Pick by Robert Longerbeam covering Sheppard. Has used his length well and not afraid of winning those battles for the ball.

Zy Alexander looks different from the rest of the group. Can tell he’s legit. Again, the broadcast said it best. Never got challenged and that’s ok. Just means QBs were looking to pick on someone else.

Safeties:

Knee bend is not a problem for Shilo Sanders. Having Deion as your dad certainly helps in that department but in terms of just bending and getting out of your breaks, he’s got that part. He’s just not a zoomer like Deion in the speed department.
