While the 2024 Winter X Games do not officially start for a week, the action has already started: The SLVSH Cup Snowmass started last week.
For those who may not know about one of skiing’s most entertaining games, SLVSH is the skiing equivalent of HORSE in basketball. Two competitors face off calling their tricks in the terrain park. The winner of SLVSH Cup Snowmass earns a place in the Men’s Ski Knuckle Huck at the 2024 Winter Olympics.
Eight of the best skiers in the world will be facing off in a bracket-style competition. The quarterfinal matchups in the top half of the bracket were Norway’s Tormod Frostad vs American Cody LaPlante and a battle of Fins between Elias Syrjä and Kuura Koivisto.
The bottom half quarter-finals saw another U.S. vs Norway matchup between Tristan Feinberg and Ferdinand Dahl, respectively, plus a battle between America’s Sam Zahner and Austria’s Matěj Švancer.
So far, all of the quarterfinal matchups of SLVSH have been completed. In the first episode, Syrjä and Koivisto faced off in a very close battle. It started with both skiers reaching SLV before Koivisto locked in and ultimately won SLV-SLVSH. The second episode was between Zahner and Švancer. The Austrian showed why he is one of freeskiing’s top young skiers, dominating Zahner to a win of S-SLVSH.
In the third matchup, Frostad and LaPlante battled it out in the closest game so far. It was all tied at SLVS before LaPlante landed a switch cork 360 with a lead tail grab which Frostad could not land, giving the American the win. The final quarterfinal was once again tied at a point between Feinberg and Dahl, though Dahl stepped up and won SLV-SLVSH.
Each match of the 2024 Winter X Games SLVSH Cup Snowmass will be shown on the X Games YouTube channel, where a new episode will be released every day until the conclusion of the event.
The 31st Winter X Games will kick off at Aspen Snowmass in Aspen, Colo., on Jan. 26 and will conclude on the 28th. There will be 18 events across skiing and snowboarding that are competed in, in what could be one of the most impressive Winter X Games with the continued progression of gnarly tricks.
