We had another action-packed week of football last week, but Week 5 of the 2024 NFL Season got off to a fast start with the Atlanta Falcons winning an overtime thriller against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday night, where there were multiple fantasy breakout performances.
With Week 5 being the first of many bye weeks, who are some breakout candidates that you should buy low on? Let’s dive into a few potential candidates!
In consecutive weeks, I listed quarterbacks Caleb Williams and Justin Fields to breakout against a below-average Colts secondary, where they recorded their best games to date with 20 and 33 points, respectively. You know what they say: “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!” We are going back to the well with Lawrence, who’s failed to record 15 fantasy points through four weeks. The Colts have surrendered the fourth-most fantasy points to quarterbacks, according to CBS Sports. So I’m favoring Lawrence in a desperation start for Jacksonville, who’s looking to avoid its fourth 0-5 start since the start of 2013.
Akers will be starting over an injured Joe Mixon for the third consecutive week. He’s only received less than 50 percent of the snaps each of the last two weeks, but I expect him to see higher usage this week in arguably his most favorable matchup to date against the Buffalo Bills. I don’t need to remind you what Derrick Henry did to Buffalo last week, but the Bills surrendered an average of 17.7 points to running backs in Weeks 1-3. Akers is listed just outside the top-30 in standard formats after only one finish inside the top-43, per Fantasy Pros.
Tight end production has been scarce this season, so Parkinson’s 11.3 fantasy points through four weeks shouldn’t be a big surprise. The Rams’ receiving core has been beat up all season, but will enter Week 5 with a favorable matchup for tight ends against the Green Bay Packers. Parkinson was second in the team in targets (7) last week, logging four receptions for 33 yards. I think he will only build upon that mark in Week 5 against a defense that’s surrendered the fifth-most points to tight ends this season.
