It was a wonderful weekend of games in week five of the 2024 college football season. Vendetta’s games of the week: week five delivered in one way or another last week. Also, Alabama vs Georgia had a weird game script but delivered a possible game-of-the-year matchup. However, this week there are not many ranked vs ranked matchups. Thankfully, there are some great conference games including new conference matchups due to CFB realignment. There is still fun to be had in week six for college football fans. Here, are the 2024 college football games of the week for week 6.
Honorable Mentions: No. 8 Miami @ California, No. 4 Tennessee @ Arkansas, Duke @ Georgia Tech, Texas Tech @ Arizona, Rutgers @ Nebraska
I always try to pick at least one Friday game but sometimes the Friday slate is barren. However, I think this game between Syracuse and newly-ranked UNLV could be some fun. Syracuse is 3-1 and coming off a get-right game against Holy Cross. The Orange have looked solid this year with an explosive offense. QB Kyle McCord has been throwing the rock around as he has 1,459 passing yards and 14 touchdowns. Syracuse has some upset potential in a trap game for UNLV after becoming ranked.
However, UNLV has passed every single test this year with flying colors. Their defense has been incredible thus far conceding 13 points per game. The Rebels’ offense has been good as well even though they lost QB Matthew Stuka who was leading the team and passing and rushing. However, new starting QB Hajj-Malik Williams looked even better leading the offense, as they hung 59 points on Fresno State. Ultimately, this could be a fun shootout in week six that could legitimize UNLV even more this season.
This game is a rematch of last year’s National Championship. However, these teams have both lost their head coaches and quarterbacks as well as had a lot of roster turnover. Michigan has another chance to stack another solid win on their résumé as they try to stay alive in the Big Ten. They have the opportunity to dominate in the trenches as Washington has not seen a team with this much talent this season. However, the Wolverines one-dimensional offense could struggle if the rushing attack does not get going in this game.
Washington has played well all season but unfortunately, they are still 2-2. Their defense has been strong keeping Washington State and Rutgers offense relatively in check. Also, Mississippi State transfer QB Will Rogers has been great for the Huskies in 2024. He has 1,354 yards and 10 touchdowns without an interception. Washington will need a good game from Rogers and RB Jonah Coleman so they can put pressure on Michigan’s offense to try and throw the ball. Overall, this should be a close one.
This game is a huge SEC matchup for multiple reasons. It will be interesting to see if Ole Miss are frauds and drop another game killing their SEC championship and or college football playoff hopes. On the other hand, South Carolina has a real upset opportunity in this game with the possibility of being ranked with a win. Also, this is an amazing SEC matchup outside of a couple of giants in that conference.
Ole Miss at South Carolina is a compelling week six matchup with stars all around the field. The Rebels have a Heisman hopeful in QB Jaxson Dart, who leads college football in passing yards. Also, electric WR Tre Harris is first in yards and second in receptions in the entire FBS. The Gamecocks have two game-wreckers on the defensive line with DE Kyle Kennard and Dylan Stewart. There should be plenty of elite athletes in this game to keep the game entertaining.
I thought this game had to be in the top five considering it’s the first semi-interesting test for Ohio State. Also, they have not appeared in games of the week thus far. The Buckeyes are legit this year even with some important losses from last year. Ohio State has the number one scoring defense as they give up only 6.75 points per game. On the other side of the ball, they are led by former Kansas State QB Will Howard. He has looked good this year efficiently throwing for over 1,000 yards with an 8:2 TD:INT ratio.
Furthermore, Ohio State skilled positions are even crazier. They have a dynamic running back duo of Quinshon Judkins and TreVeyon Henderson. Also, wide receivers Emeka Egbuka and Jeremiah Smith, who is a true freshman, continue to be problems for the opposing defense. However, the Hawkeyes have a solid defense like always and their offense is not horrible this year. Iowa RB Kaleb Johnson has been fantastic this year with 685 yards and nine touchdowns. It will be interesting to see how Ohio State handles its first real test of the year.
This game is the only ranked matchup in Week 6. However, this is a weird one as both teams have not looked great this year. Missouri is undefeated but they beat Boston College in a one-score game in week three and escaped with a double-overtime win against Vanderbilt in their last game. However, this team in recent years has had a knack for winning tight games. Also, QB Brady Cook and star WR Luther Burdens’ connection is starting to get back into elite form.
Now, Texas A&M is 4-1 but they dropped a game to a beatable Notre Dame and struggled with Bowling Green. However, backup QB Marcel Reed may start again which honestly might be better for the Aggies. He at least offers some dual-threat danger for opposing defenses. It is time to see if Texas A&M can turn the page on that Notre Dame loss with a meaningful win against a top-ten opponent. On the other hand, Missouri can go on the road and show that they are worthy of that number in front of their name. Ultimately, this game is the 2024 college football week six matchup with the most on the line.
