Welcome to the unofficial start of NBA trade season!
In this league, yes, there are plenty of fans — even some pundits — who love the transactional period as much as the actual being played on the court. Whether if that should the be case is neither here nor there, but I digress.
Dec. 15 is when most free agents who signed over the summer become trade-eligible. Last year, there were 81 players who became eligible; this year, there are 85, less than two months away from the Feb. 6 trade deadline; 17 more players won’t become eligible until Jan. 15 because they got a raise of at least 20 percent or better, their salary is more than the minimum or they signed using Early Bird or Bird rights.
But we’ll tackle those once we get there.
Interestingly enough, there have already been two players on this list that have been moved–though neither move could have been made official until Sunday. The Miami Heat traded Thomas Bryant to the Indiana Pacers for a 2031 second-round pick swap on Friday; the Brooklyn Nets traded Dennis Schroder for De’Anthony Melton and three second-rounders Saturday.
The Portland Trail Blazers are the only team that doesn’t have a player that will become eligible Sunday. Conversely, the team with the most is the Philadelphia 76ers, who have eight after courting a brand new squad around Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey this offseason.
