2023 MLB Draft Profile: Thomas White

Thomas White is one of the most hyped up high school arms available in the 2023 MLB Draft. With the draft mere hours away, it’s time to review one of the most intriguing prospects available. It’s not often that teams have the chance to get their hands on a 6-foot-5 left-handed starter. Is the hype warranted when it comes to White? That’s exactly what we’re here to discuss!

What might be more odd is that White hails from Phillips Academy in Massachusetts. It’s not often that Mass is producing top end big league talent. In fact, there has never been a high school left-hander taken from the Bay State. However, teams probably shouldn’t worry about White facing mediocre competition. Barring what happens in the draft, White has a commitment to play for Vanderbilt. A team like that doesn’t come calling if there is nothing here to work with.

Scouting grades (according to MLB.com): Fastball: 60 | Curveball: 55 | Changeup: 50 | Control: 50 | Overall: 50

White has the size obviously. The fastball velocity is really good too as White sits at 96-97 MPH. Of course, there is always more variance when it comes to high school players. Then again, if a team doesn’t select White early, he has all the leverage in the world to just fulfill his commitment to Vandy. Maybe the raw ability is just too good to pass so that doesn’t happen.

Teams are really going to have to do their homework here. It’s one thing to dominate in high shool in Massachusetts. Did scouts like what they saw at the PDP League and East Coast Pro Showcase? That’s probably what will determine White’s stock.

White has a nice three pitch mix but command seems to be the biggest issue right now. He’s a raw lanky lefty so that part really shouldn’t be a surprise. The curveball seems to be a plus pitch but White may need to keep padding his pitch arsenal to become a stud at the MLB level.

We’ll see what happens with Thomas White during the 2023 MLB Draft. The raw talent is obvious and may be too good to pass. White posted a 0.60 ERA across 58.2 innings pitched this past year, but what does it actually mean? What does the signability look like? How eager is White to pitch in college? All of those questions will determine whether it’s a moot point to draft him. At least this year anyway.
