2023 MLB Draft Profile: Max Clark

Max Clark is an 18-year-old phenom with plenty of tools that could translate to the MLB level. But does the Vanderbilt commit from Indiana have what it takes to make it to MLB? Let’s try and figure that out.

Scouting grades: Hit: 60 | Power: 50 | Run: 70 | Arm: 65 | Field: 60 | Overall: 60

As a center fielder, it’s clear what stands out within Clark’s game: His blistering speed, plus defense and arm. His raw speed helps him get too many balls other center fielders could only dream of getting to.

But his baseball IQ and understanding of defense allow him to take more efficient routes, maximizing his potential as a defender. But if you thought that Max Clark was just some defensive wizard then you would be mistaken.

He’s got that always pretty and smooth left-handed swing with an even better approach to go with it. He prioritizes hitting line drives and going gap to gap with his swings. He isn’t as focused on the launch angle as many other players in today’s game.

But when looking at his pure bat speed and how hard he can hit the ball, it’s clear to see that the HR power/swing will come to him in due time. Especially if a coach can teach him how to elevate that launched angle. Because his exit velocities already indicate the possibility for serious HR power.

A guy like Max Clark already has a lot of the tools you want in a center fielder. The elite speed with the possibility to steal plenty of bases. An elite glove with an even stronger arm to back it up. At the absolute worst, Clark can be a career defensive wizard like a Kevin Kiermaier.

But if that bat can develop to the level many people think, Clark has the ability to be a five-tool player. The potential here is crazy, I don think he is as polished as Dylan Crews or Paul Skenes right now.

But I think in the right system surrounded by the right people we can see Max Clark blossom into a truly great player.

Overall, Max Clark is a prospect that many teams are going to fall in love with. They will see the Elite speed and plus defining and feel like they are getting a guy who can provide value to a team right away. But I think a guy like Clark would benefit from some years in the minors.

Allow him to work on and develop that power swing and just his approach in general. No need to rush the bat on a kid like this, because if you develop the bat to an elite level, I think we are talking about a potential Hall of Famer.
