2023 MLB Draft Profile: Colin Houck

One of the more balanced prospects out of this 2023 MLB Draft class, there isn’t anything Colin Houck doesn’t do good on the baseball field. A two-sport athlete who received power five offers to be a quarterback, the athleticism is clearly off the charts. Let’s look at his MLB Draft Profile!

Scouting grades: Hit: 55 | Power: 55 | Run: 50 | Arm: 60 | Field: 50 | Overall: 55

Colin Houck obviously decided to go down the MLB route and it clearly seems like it will pay off. With him also now solely focusing on baseball, the room for growth is potentially endless.

Houck’s bat speed and raw power should translate to some plus power at higher levels. He does get a little pull happy, but overall shows a great ability to drive the ball. I’d like to see him hit the ball to more parts of the field, but it’s clear that the power is there.

He does get a little swing happy at times which does lead to more strikeouts than you’d like to see from a high schooler. His plate vision could use some work, as he chases quite a bit inflating those strikeout numbers–both of which are things that can easily be improved on once he shifts his entire focus to baseball. He has already shown improvements at the plate but still needs to be able to hit for power to all parts of the field.

Nothing on the defensive end jumps out, but his 6-foot-2 frame should give him a lot of range at short, which should make up for his average speed at the position. The glove itself and arm again are average but could see improvements in the coming years.

Overall with Colin Houck, there is a lot to like. He is oozing with athleticism and has the potential to be a gem in this draft class with a great baseline for every tool and tons of room to improve in each aspect.

There isn’t anything he does badly and overall may be one of the safest picks outside of the top five. But sometimes being the safe pick just isn’t enough. But I like a lot of what I see from Colin Houck.
