Are the Jets one of the scrappiest teams in the NFL? (Ed Mulholland | USA TODAY Sports)

2022 NFL Week 5 Overreactions

We are now five weeks — or nearly 30 percent, for the math nerds — through the 2022 NFL season! We haven’t stopped overreacting yet, and I’m not sure we’ll stop overreacting anytime soon! Okay, enough jibber-jabber — let’s jump into some of our Week 5 overreactions!

Trey Daubert:

The Jets are scrappy. Still probably a last place team but I am convinced they have turned a corner. No, nothing crazy; I mean turned the corner as in, they no longer are totally embarrassing. The Jets put up a 40 burger on the Dolphins and looked good doing it. A lot of the young players they have picked look good. Still at least a year away, but I think they may be a team that hangs in late in games compared to teams in years past.

Christopher Bagdonas:

The Packers’ season is over if they don’t get DJ Moore. The Giants showcased their struggles throughout the second half in London. Aaron Rodgers can’t do it all himself. The offense has really struggled to goal at times. It’s clear that they’re having a rough time without a bonafide No. 1 receiver. The cost doesnt matter; without Moore, the Packers will risk watching Minnesota waltz to winning the division.

Matt Hanifan:

Are we sure the Patriots can’t stumble into the playoffs? Are the Pats in the playoff picture, if the season were to end today? No, they’re the No. 11 seed. Will it be an uphill battle? Yes, but we’re only five games in! It’s a Week 5 overreaction for a reason. We know New England (likely) won’t win the AFC East, already eliminating four of the possible playoff spots. The teams outside of the top-4 seeds above them are: The New York Jets, Los Angeles Chargers, Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars and Denver Broncos. Though, there’s a lot that can happen now between now and the end of the season (for both New England and the rest of the NFL), but that’s not stout competition. New England’s defense — which ranks No. 9 in DVOA — might be legitmately good, especially after blanking the Lions to zero on Sunday. Its offense has been subpar, but its ground game has been efficient enough to catalyze long drives that result in points, which helps out its defense. The Pats also have a manageable schedule for the rest of the way, so I definitely see a world where they squeak into the No. 7-seed in the AFC.

Anthony Miranda:

Kevin O’Connell was the right hire for the Minnesota Vikings. The Vikings are 4-1, which is a great sign for the franchise. Honestly, they should have beaten the Bears, Lions, and Saints by more points, but a win is a win. Last year, the Vikings’ first 5 losses were by one score or less, with three of those losses being decided by 3 points or less. I still think the Vikings are good. Not great, but at least they are winning close games, which was a problem that plagued them with former head coach Mike Zimmer. Although they have not looked great, at least they are showing they can win close games with new head coach Kevin O’Connell.

Chase Racherbaumer:

Chris Ballard will be Jobless Unless the Colts Make Postseason. Colts General Manager, Chris Ballard, should officially be on the hot seat. Ballard has refused to fix the quarterback situation since Andrew Luck retired. Ever since Luck shocked the world with his stunning retirement, Ballard has been fixing the Colts’ glaring quarterback hole with a band-aid for the past couple of years. First Ballard signed a washed-up Philip Rivers, then traded a handful of high draft picks for Carson Wentz, and has done the same thing this year with Matt Ryan. Every year, Indianapolis has tons of money to spend during the offseason, but Ballard usually refuses to use it. If the Matt Ryan experiment ends up failing, (which it looks that way right now) and the Colts don’t make the playoffs, Ballard will be jobless by next year.
