How good did it feel to sit back and watch NFL action all say Sunday? I speak for all of us in saying I missed that feeling. We were greeted with a fantastic slate of games last weekend, including a game played in a monsoon, an overtime game in which neither team wanted to win, and a division with zero wins that featured two of its teams playing each other. The games last week were great, but this week promises to bring the action even more. Here are our best games of the week for Week 2 in the NFL.
Honorable Mention: New England Patriots at Pittsburgh Steelers, Tennessee Titans at Buffalo Bills
Our opening game pits divisional foes against one another in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the New Orleans Saints. The Saints might have surprised some folks last week both in the good sense of the term and the bad. They showed heart and resilience with their comeback victory. However, they never should have been in that position, to begin with against the Falcons. Look for Tampa to try to get ahead early and have their defense keep this game out of reach. This should prove to be the Bucs first real test of the season after dismantling the Dallas Cowboys 19-3 last week. I am sure the injury to Dak Prescott didn’t help matters, but they were going to be outmatched regardless.
I highlight this game for one of the best games of the week, because both the Cardinals and the Raiders had disappointing opening results. The Cardinals were crushed by the visiting Kansas City Chiefs 44-21, never really establishing an identity on offense. Plus, going into this game, there were questions about this Chiefs offense without Tyreek Hill. Those have been answered. For the Raiders, they lost on the road against the Los Angeles Chargers 24-19. Their biggest issue was protecting the quarterback, giving up six sacks. Turnovers cost this team as well, with Derek Carr throwing three INTs. I look forward to seeing both teams cleaning up their week one mistakes.
Another divisional rivalry, the Chicago Bears and the Green Bay Packers is another game where we will learn quite a bit about both teams. The Bears upset the San Francisco 49ers 19-10 in a monsoon. The video of Justin Fields sliding through the water after the final kneel brings me pure joy. Was this a fluke, as the rain a big factor, or is this Bears team actually something? This game against the Packers should prove a lot. The Packers’ defense was torched by Justin Jefferson and the Vikings, ultimately losing 23-7. The Packers’ offense never established any rhythm, showing how much the loss of Davante Adams is hurting their team. With another week of practice under their belt, can this offense get in sync?
This game very well could go down as the game of the week, if the Thursday Night Football game wasn’t what it was. Two high-powered offenses clashing in a game is guaranteed to provide fireworks. Hit the over on this one. The Vikings, as mentioned above, looked solid at times against a good Packers defense. Fade the Vikings if you want, but this team could surprise folks and possibly win this division if Green Bay doesn’t figure it out. A.J. Brown’s debut with the Eagles couldn’t have gone better, going off for 10 catches and 155 yards in a win over the Lions, 38-35. Look for both teams to air it out early and often.
Another game guaranteed to bring the action. The Chargers offense last week showed flashes of a potential top-five offense against a Raiders defense that played well against the run but gave up 279 yards and three touchdowns in the air. This Chiefs offense picked up right where it left off last year, running up the score early and never looking back. It will be interesting to see the adjustments the Chiefs make against a notably better defense than the Cardinals have. These two could very well see each other come January in the AFC Championship.
