2022 NBA draft second round sleepers with high upside potential

The 2022 NBA draft is around the corner and it will take place on Thursday, June 23. There has been a lot of hype around the consensus top three players and who will go number one. Also, there has been a focus on the lottery as a whole but I wanted to look at the less known prospects. In the NBA draft, there is still plenty of value to find late in the first round and throughout the second round. These players might not be future all-stars but they can fill an imperative role to help their team win.

I decided to search for 2022 NBA draft second-round sleepers with high upside potential. There were some names like Walker Kessler, Christian Braun, and Jalen Williams that I considered for this article. However, their stock has been rising and I am not certain they will be second-round picks. Now, I have found three guys in the 2022 NBA draft that I believe can be successful in the NBA. I think they are second-round talent that can blossom into effective pieces on winning teams in the NBA.

Ron Harper Jr.

Ron Harper Jr. is a 6’6” 245-pound senior from Rutgers University. He had a fantastic four-year career at Rutgers University where he got better every season. He averaged a solid 15.8 points per game and 5.9 rebounds per game. Harper Jr. achieved these numbers while shooting 44.2% from the field and an impressive 39.8% from three.

Harper Jr. will probably be a three and D type player. He is an incredible defender with a lot of versatility. He, who is similar to his NBA Champion father Ron Harper, plays with a lot of intensity on the defensive side. Harper Jr. is an effective defender because of his size, footwork, and 7’1” wingspan. He can guard multiple positions on the court with footwork that will allow him to stay in front of guards and size that will help him against bigs. Besides his potential as a defender Harper Jr. is a fluid scorer and shot creator. He can score at all three levels and has the skill to be a go to option in certain situations. I think his ability as a shot creator gives him the upside of being a prominent isolation scorer which is not a common trait in the second round.

The best parts of Harper’s game are important NBA skills. He is a talented multi-positional defender which is coveted by teams. Furthermore, he is an efficient three-point shooter with great range as he can pull deeper three-pointers. I think he will always have a strong floor as a three and D player. This type of play style for a wing makes him a great fit for many teams, specifically the Sacramento Kings. Finally, his ability to finish through contact at the rim as well as shot create for himself in isolation are high upside traits that increase his ceiling.

David Roddy

David Roddy is a 6’5” 252-pound guard/forward from Colorado State. He had a good three year collegiate career. Roddy averaged 19.2 points per game and 7.5 rebounds per game while shooting 57.1% on field goals in 2021. He had the capability to play football or basketball in college. Roddy chose basketball but he did keep his huge football frame. His unorthodox body has been seen as a concern for some teams but he has not let that affect him on the court.

Roddy is a high effort guy that is constantly bringing the energy every time he is on the floor. This energy shows in his rebounding as he is skilled at coming down with boards. He is not the quickest nor the most athletic so he leans on his effort and size. His 252-pound frame helps make up for his lack of height. Roddy is a good defender because of his physicality and his strength which allows him to hold his own against bigger players. His biggest draw is he shot 43.8% from the three-point line this last season. That is phenomenal efficiency. It is important he keeps that up in the NBA because every team would take an elite shooter.

I think Roddy has a high upside as a physical rebounder and defender in the NBA. He has some versatility as a defender because of his size and strength. Along with defense, I think he has some potential as a playmaker. He showed good vision and the ability to make tough passes at Colorado State. Furthermore, he has the skills to knock down spot up and off the dribble three-pointers. I think if he can continue shooting the three ball in the NBA as well as he did his last year in college. He will be a great second-round value in the 2022 NBA draft. Roddy has solid baseline talent and a high work ethic that I believe will help him grow into a successful NBA player.

Jean Montero

Jean Montero is a 6’2” 175-pound international guard. He is from the Dominican Republic and he played for the Gran Canaria team in Spain. Montero is a young prospect as he will only be 19 years old when he is drafted. However, he has played in the FIBA Americas U16 Championship and the FIBA U17 World Cup. Furthermore, Montero played for the Dominican Republic national team in 2020. He is a young prospect with a lot of experience on big stages. Montero signed with Overtime Elite, which was the American Professional basketball league’s first international player, as he prepared for the draft process.

Montero is a flashy and creative scorer. He has great speed and crafty ball handling that he uses to attack the rim. His quick first step allows him to blow by defenders and his nice touch around the rim displays his solid ability as a finisher. Montero possesses a smooth pull-up jumper that gives him more weapons on offense. Also, he has a solid three-point shot as he can connect on threes coming off the dribble and in catch and shoot situations. Finally, I think he has some promise as a playmaker. Not only because of his vision but also because as his scoring gets better it will just create more openings for his teammates.

Montero is an intriguing prospect. He needs time to develop but he can give meaningful minutes to a team like the Los Angeles Clippers as their back up point guard. Montero is a bit of a risk as he is a very young international prospect but he has performed at a high level. He will need to grow as a defender and he will have to become more consistent as a scorer. Nevertheless, Montero’s high upside potential as an offensive threat is massive. He is a three-level scorer with impressive speed and skillful ball handling in his game. I think he can be an effective scoring option off the bench and I believe he has the capabilities to become a natural scorer in the future. Montero’s offensive potential makes him a steal in the second round of the 2022 NBA draft.

These were three 2022 NBA draft prospects that can be great values in the second round. I think they have the potential to make the leap from second-round selections into successful NBA players.
