2020 NFL Draft War Room: Green Bay Packers

2020 NFL Draft

As the 2020 NFL Draft gets closer, we will dive into each team’s war room to try to predict who they will select. The Packers are the next team we will discuss. After a trip to the NFC Championship game, Green Bay holds the 30th pick in the first round. The Packers hold 10 picks altogether, but 5 of them are in the 6th and 7th round. Let’s try to predict what the Packers might do on draft day.

The Packers really do have a strong roster. There are not many holes here at all. I’m not sure if the Packers are thinking this way but my guess would be that receiver and defensive line are the priority. Give Aaron Rodgers more help as he ages and a stronger unit on the defensive line. Who knows, maybe the Aaron Rodgers replacement is going to be the pick at 30.

In such a deep receiver draft, I think the Packers would be wise to grab one. Marquez Valdes Scantling and EQ St. Brown are fine, but they aren’t established number two wide outs. There are a lot of options. Jalen Reagor, Justin Jefferson, Laviska Shenault, etc. Whoever Green Bay likes, grab one.

Kenny Clark is a stalwart along the defensive line but the two other spots are up for grabs really. Dean Lowry and Tyler Lancaster are the incumbent starters as of right now. More bodies in that unit would be smart. Green Bay would be looking at 3-4 defensive ends. In that second round range, someone like Raekwon Davis or Jordan Elliott could be a wise pick. The outside pass rushing unit with the Za’Darius Smith and Preston Smith is dominant. Finding upgrades up front needs to be a priority.

Somewhere in the 3rd round range, tight end should be something the Packers look at. It’s not like Jimmy Graham is still productive but he is gone now. You’re looking at Jace Sternberger as the starter right now. I think the former Texas A&M product has some talent but he’s unproven. Sternberger essentially did nothing as a rookie appearing in 6 games with no catches. Drafting a tight end in the third round would be a wise roll of the dice. Albert Okwuegbunam would look good in green and yellow. Big, athletic, 6-foot-5 target. Rodgers needs a dependable tight end. Maybe it’s Sternberger, maybe it’s not. Better draft someone regardless.
