12 Days of Prospects: Day 3, Corbin Carroll

We’ve reached the third day of December which brings us to the third-ranked prospect in MLB: outfielder Corbin Carroll. The 22-year-old plays for the Arizona Diamondbacks and like the last two prospects, Carroll made his MLB debut in 2022.

The Numbers:

Scouting Grades on a 20-80 scale:

  • Hit: 65
  • Power: 50
  • Run: 70
  • Arm: 55
  • Field: 60
  • Overall: 65

If you’re a top-three prospect, chances are you’re going to move up very quickly. That’s exactly what Carroll did, starting 2022 in Double-A and ending it in the majors.

In 91 games combined between Double-A and Triple-A, Carroll hit 24 home runs, batted .307, and produced a 1.035 OPS. The 70-grade speed helped him steal 31 bases in those 93 games as well. Once called up, Carroll played in 32 games for the Diamondbacks and batted .260 with nine doubles, two triples, and four home runs. Before he was even promoted to Triple-A, he flashed that 70-grade speed by stealing 41 bases in 45 attempts in his first 109 minor league games.

He can hit and he can run which is going to put him atop of the Diamondbacks lineup.

The Potential

Carroll has an amazing approach at the plate, drives the ball to all parts of the field, and can of course run like crazy. His defense is already graded above average, and the speed and range he has in the outfield are going to make him a consistent Gold Glover.

Carroll has received comparisons to outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury during his time with the Red Sox. Elite speed, Gold Glove defensive ability in center field, and fantastic bat-to-ball skills from the left side of the plate.

Developing more power is the only thing Carroll needs to become great, but his ability to hit around .300 with elite defense already makes him a star in the making.

The Verdict

Carroll already showed us what he’s capable of in his short debut this past season. His speed is just next level and for an outfielder, that’s just a lethal combo. He may not hit 40 home runs, but a .300 hitter with around 20 home runs and Gold Glove defense is more than the Diamondbacks could ask for.

Along with Alek Thomas and Druw Jones, Carroll could lead one of the best outfield trios we’ve seen in the big leagues. In a full 2023 season, Carroll is going to excite D-back fans and will even have a chance to win Rookie of the Year.
