Zion Williamson has committed to a future in the Big Easy, signing a five-year rookie max extension worth up to $231 million with the New Orleans Pelicans, as first reported by The Athletic’s Shams Charania.
Williamson, who hasn’t played a competitive basketball game since May 4, 2021, was sidelined for the entirety of the 2021-22 with nagging injuries. Hampered by a foot fracture then soreness, the 21-year-old endured a vicious cycle of healing and recovery.
The high-flying 6-foot-6 forward has had a young career marred by injuries, but in the shortened 2020-21 season, Williamson’s full ability was on display for the league. In 61 appearances, Williamson posted averages of 27 points, 7.2 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 0.9 steals, shooting 61.1 percent from the field, 29.4 percent from beyond the arc and 69.8 percent at the charity stripe. He was rewarded with his first All-Star nod for his performance.
The Pelicans and Williamson have made it clear both sides were keen on inking a long-term deal. The Spartanburg, S.C. native told Charania he “couldn’t sign it fast enough” when the season concluded. The deal is still being finalized, with both sides working out protection clauses.
