Philadelphia Phillies ace Zack Wheeler has agreed to a three-year extension worth $126 million with the organization, beat writer Matt Gelb of The Athletic first reported Monday.
Wheeler, 33, was entering the final year of a five-year, $118 million deal signed ahead of the COVID-shortened 2020 season. He is still expected to make $23.5 million this season, though the terms of his new deal have not been released).
He has developed into one of the premier starting pitchers in baseball. He finished No. 6 in the NL CY Young voting last season, posting a 3.61 ERA (115 ERA+) and a 3.15 FIP across 32 starts. He struck out 212 batters with a 26.9 strikeout rate, tying the second-best mark of his career in, while surrendering just 39 walks.
Though where the real money is made is in the postseason, posting a 2.42 ERA in 11 career postseason starts (10 starts). Last postseason, he had a 2.08 ERA, 2.37 FIP with a .491 OPS allowed in four postseason starts, helping the Phillies reach the NLCS for the second consecutive season.
