Over six months after getting inexplicably fired by ESPN, popular NBA voice Zach Lowe has officially joined The Ringer, he announced Monday.
Bill Simmons, the founder and CEO of The Ringer, teased that people needed to tune into the start of Sunday’s episode of The Bill Simmons Show. Lo and behold, it was Simmons’ announcement that Lowe joined The Ringer.
This shouldn’t be a surprise to many. Lowe worked under Simmons for Grantland, a sports and pop culture blog that aired under ESPN for four years before closing in 2015. Lowe stuck at ESPN until being fired last fall while Simmons started his own company, but the two individuals had multiple guest appearances on their own respective podcasts; Lowe hosted a weekly podcast called The Lowe Post, arguably ESPN’s most popular podcast before its closure.
It was only a matter of time before Lowe and Simmons worked with each other. Lowe is one of the most respected voices in the basketball space. He has brilliant knowledge of all things NBA-related and does a good job weaving analytics and level-headed analysis into the topics he discusses.
In all honesty, it remains baffling that ESPN decided to fire him, but it’s also not surprising because most of their sports lack legitimately good analysis outside of a handful of individuals that they don’t feature. It’s all drama and narrative talk, nothing tangible to the space they own.
It’s not perfect, but The Ringer has better basketball analysis with Ryen Russillo, Seerat Sohi and Howard Beck, among others. Lowe immediately tops that list. I wonder if ESPN regrets their decision? Oh well!
