The New York Yankees need starting pitching. It’s the number one thing they need. One of those guys who can be part of the solution is CC Sabathia. The old savvy vet was set to hit free agency but he’s not going anywhere. CC Sabathia will return to the New York Yankees on a one-year deal worth $8 million. It will be a $2 million pay cut from his 2017 salary with the Yankees.
Joel Sherman of the New York Post was the first to report the news:
I hear #Yankees and CC Sabathia are working thru final details of what, when finalized, would be a 1-yr, $8M deal. Hear Sabathia, in planned last season, didn't want to look around, wanted to quickly work out something with NYY.

Sherman continues that the plan may be that Sabathia works as a tandem with Jordan Montgomery as a potential 5th starter. Montgomery figures to return sometime during the all-star break. The Yankees offseason has been busier than other teams. Brett Gardner has already been re-signed as well. The Yanks gave Gardner $9 million so they have spent money to keep some of the leaders in the clubhouse.
This move doesn’t come as a suprise as Brian Cashman has always been high on Sabathia.
As Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said Tuesday at the general managers’ meetings, “If I can get CC back, I’d still like to bring multiples behind CC.”
Now we will have to wait and see who New York also adds to pad the pitching staff. JA Happ is a free agent and could be one of those options. Patrick Corbin is also high on their radar. Maybe they will try to land Corey Kluber or Carlos Carrasco from the Indians. Seattle appears to also be shopping James Paxton too so maybe he is an option. David Robertson and Zach Britton are also free agents so the team will have to patch together the bullpen as well.
