After 41 games, the Yankees are not in a bad spot despite their abysmal 5-10 start, as they sit above .500 and are right in the mix of a tight division race. They are slowly rediscovering their form and the team is on the road to contention again. Gerrit Cole is off to an incredible start this season and is one of the favorites for the American League Cy Young Award, but the rest of the Yankee starting pitchers have been mediocre. Corey Kluber and Dom German have been more consistent recently, but the closer, Aroldis Chapman, has been the star of the show. In 15 innings, Chapman has nine saves and ZERO earned runs. If manager Aaron Boone has one player to thank for their 22-19 record, it is Chapman.
Another aspect of the Yankees that was criticized after the team’s slow start was the offense. Vendetta’s Evan Kinsey wrote about how offenses across Major League Baseball are struggling, and the Bronx Bombers were no exception. However, a Giancarlo Stanton hot streak followed by Aaron Judge’s return to form has helped the Yankees’ offense find its rhythm again. Many experts picked the Yankees to not only win the AL East but to also represent the American League in the World Series this year. The Yankees’ odds of claiming either have decreased, however, as the much-improved Red Sox and Blue Jays have made the race for the AL East crown a four-horse race. All that said, the Yankees roster still holds a plethora of talent and if they make it to the postseason, anything can happen.
