After rebooting this past spring in hopes of finding some new life, the XFL, owned by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, has lost an estimated $60 million in its return, according to Sports Illustrated.
The XFL has officially bounced back to some extent after their stint in 2020. Due to the Coronavirus outbreak in 2020, the pandemic forced the league to fold mid-way through the season. Now, the XFL has played their first full season since the 2001 season, but it didn’t go as planned financially.
The XFL lost an estimated $60 million this season after much hype entering the season.
In their first year, Johnson and business partner Dany Garcia fell short of expectations, but that doesn’t mean they can’t turn the league profitable.
“We’re extremely well-capitalized for the long-term,” Garcia said. “This is our new WWE. The next massive live property.“
“My goal was to get through the first season,” Johnson said. “This is not just an endeavor that’s going to full up a portfolio and one day we flip it and we’re out. This is legacy, this is the long game.”
Johnson eventually took to Twitter to clap back at haters saying the league already failed.
“I’ve tried to tell him his whole life, but he’s never listened to me. I play the long game in business and XFL is no exception. We saw some nice successes and took some L’s in our first season that we learn from. 75-100 XFL players will be competing in NFL camps this fall. That’s a big number that will continue to grow season over season. We’re in it for the long haul. Step by step building the league of opportunity. Like with any venture, success takes time. Thanks XFL fans for the love & support.”
