WWE’s Chairman Vince McMahon underwent major spinal surgery, as first reported by TMZ. The outlet reported the surgery lasted four hours and that he is now “at home recovering”.
Fightful Select reported more on the matter, noting that the surgery had kept him from doing any work on either SmackDown or RAW following. Those close to him reportedly claimed that it was a “major, life-altering operation” as it would have been for anyone else in his position.
WWE didn’t provide a direct answer on whether the surgery would affect his work with WWE going forward. The report also noted that Triple H was not at RAW last Monday, the show instead being run by Bruce Prichard, but Triple H is expected back “imminently”.
The 77-year-old returned to the helm of WWE earlier this year, despite retiring amidst sexual assault allegations in 2022. He flexed his shareholder voting power to stage somewhat of a coup on the boardroom, returning and then masterminding a merger deal with UFC parent company Endeavor.
When the merger is finalized, the new company will be led by CEO Ari Emanuel, with McMahon maintaining the title of Executive Chairman. Nick Khan and Dana White will remain Presidents of WWE and UFC respectively.
On July 22, 2022, Vince McMahon announced his retirement. His departure stemmed from sexual assault allegations made against him, spurring an investigation by WWE’s Board of Directors. It was found that there were signed NDAs worth $12 million paid to former employees who had alleged sexual harassment against McMahon.
It was amidst this coming out that McMahon stepped down as CEO and made his official retirement from WWE. Although he would later, as mentioned, return to the company with the goal of finding a potential buyer.
