Can Willy Adames Be A Winner In The Rafael Devers Trade?

Willy Adames is not having a great start to life with the San Francisco Giants. So far, it is one of the worst deals handed out in free agency last year. However, the outlook for him and the Giants as a whole is changing big time. Buster Posey pulled off a stunner last night after adding Rafael Devers from the Red Sox. He is one of the best lefty bats in the game and should do great in McCovey Cove. Sticking him behind Adames in the order might be exactly what the doctor ordered.

The former Rays and Brewers infielder currently has a .201/.284/.340 slash line with eight home runs and 32 runs batted in. That’s flat out not good enough for a guy making $182 million. Thankfully, the rest of the Giants have picked up the slack, as they find themselves firmly in a race with the Dodgers for the NL West. And now they have a big time weapon to add to the top of the lineup.

Butterfly Effect?

Let’s take a look at past instances where a guy batting in front of a slugger has improved numbers. This is assuming the top third of the Giants order is Jung Hoo Lee – Adames – Devers. One of the most recent examples came last year with Raffy’s former rivals. When Juan Soto spent a year with the Yankees, he had a career season batting in front of Aaron Judge. While his Mets numbers have not lived up to his levels yet, they are improving. Knowing that the guy behind you is one of the most dangerous hitters around can completely change your approach at the plate. It also changes the way that pitchers approach you. That might be the kind of change that lets Adames become the guy that Posey and the Giants were willing to pay all that money for.

You can also look at it the opposite way. If Devers bats in front of Adames there could be benefits. Look no further than Pete Alonso right now. As soon as Soto entered the Mets lineup it was either in the 2 or 3 hole. Regardless, Carlos Mendoza has inserted the Polar Bear behind him. He responded by tearing the cover off of the baseball to start 2025. Despite cooling down slightly, he still has a .293/.390/.570 slash line with 17 homers and 63 RBIs. Adames should have a little optimism about his newest teammate and what he will do once he gets to town.

Willy Adames is having a season to forget so far. However, the whole landscape of the Giants’ batting order is different with Rafael Devers now in the fold.
