Will The Red Sox Regret Losing Shane Drohan In The Rule 5 Draft?

We saw it coming from a mile away. Don’t ask me why these teams don’t consult me. I tried to warn them and it’s exactly what happened. The 2023 MLB Rule 5 Draft is in the books (click here for the results) and Shane Drohan was selected by the Chicago White Sox with the 4th overall selection.

Keep in mind, this comes on the heels of losing Thad Ward a year ago. They also lost reliever Ryan Fernandez to the Cardinals who selected him 6th overall.

Boston had spots on the 40-man roster. They opted to not protect Drohan and lost him entirely in the process. I don’t really get why they didn’t add him to the 40-man. Worst case, he flames out and you DFA him. Best case, he doesn’t make the White Sox roster and you get him back. Although, I wouldn’t count on that best case scenario. The White Sox stink and they can afford to keep Drohan on the big league team.

Why Did The Red Sox Expose Shane Drohan To The Rule 5 Draft?

I talked about this at length in the post which can be seen in the embed. The former Florida State product learned a cutter and really took off in the early stages of the minor league season. However, once he hit AAA, Drohan got hammered and that’s where we stand right now.

All the Sox had to do was put him on the 40-man. If Drohan turns into a reliable starter for Chicago, the decision to exclude Drohan from the roster is going to look like a foolish one. Craig Breslow is supposed to be an expert on pitching. Time will tell if he got this one correct.
