Will The Red Sox Make A Play For Aaron Judge?

At this point, your guess is as good as mine regarding the Red Sox potential plans for the upcoming offseason. The farm system is improving but they’re just making things up when it comes to the MLB roster under the Chaim Bloom era. The wildest rumor is now being spread through the streets of the Boston sports media realm. Will the Sox make a play for Aaron Judge!?!

On some surface level, these rumors do make some sense. The Red Sox need an outfielder. The Red Sox aren’t paying anyone long term minus Chris Sale and Trevor Story. They also need a power hitter that can hit the ball out of the ballpark. Oh, and it would be a gut punch to the Yankees. I get it back it’s hard to see how this becomes reality.

The Red Sox already have to re-sign Xander Bogaerts and figure out a long term extension for Rafael Devers. Until both of those things happen, how can Boston really prioritize Judge if they can’t lock down the superstars already in-house?

Furthermore, Chaim Bloom has shown almost no willingness to improve the MLB roster with high dollar signings. Trevor Story is the lone exception but is also someone who’s a high level athlete that can play any middle infield position. Those guys are just valuable. Will Boston really pay the premium fee for 31-year-old Judge when Bloom has prioritized the future over everything? Seems rather unlikely. There’s also an injury risk with Judge that needs to be factored in as well.

Maybe the Red Sox will get into the bidding war but maybe only to make the Yankees sweat. Given the year that Judge is having, New York is almost forced to bring him back at all costs. It’s hard to imagine they won’t match any potential offer that comes in. This is the Yankees after all and Aaron Judge is their franchise player. The pressure is on.

Nevertheless, we could see some fireworks this offseason. Given the unpredictability of this Red Sox front office, does anybody truly know what to expect?
