Is this reactionary? Probably. Do I care? Nope. The Charlotte Hornets played their first game of the 2021 NBA Summer League last night. My guy Grant Riller didn’t shoot lights out like he usually does, but LiAngelo Ball was there to pick up the slack. Gelo finished the game with 16 points, good for second on the team behind James Bouknight’s 19-point effort. The 22-year-old shot very efficiently, hitting five of 10 from the field, including five of eight from beyond the arc. He added two assists, two rebounds, and two steals to round out a very promising 2021 debut.
When LiAngelo Ball was first signed to the Hornets summer roster, most saw the move as a gesture of good will to his brother, 2021 Rookie of the Year LaMelo Ball. Small market teams usually have a tough time keeping their stars around, so giving Gelo some run in meaningless games was the least they could do. However, after a performance like that, there might be a real shot LiAngelo gets an NBA contract – a two-way deal at the very least. Sure, it’s only one game, but we’ve known Gelo can play since his high school days after watching the Ball brothers terrorize nationally-ranked opponents. He has a few more games to prove himself on this stage and he is off to a good start, putting his shot-making and athleticism on display. Charlotte’s summer coach has reportedly been impressed with Ball thus far.
The Hornets dropped their first Summer League game to the Portland Trail Blazers. I’m sticking with my prediction that they’ll win the summer title, because why not. The Rockets also looked really in their first summer game, and they were my backup pick. If Charlotte keeps getting this type of production out of LiAngelo Ball this summer, look for him to potentially secure a contract. This is his best opportunity to become an NBA player since going undrafted in 2018 – he appears to be making the most of it.
