Will Borgen was brought to New York via the Kaapo Kakko trade and apparently the Rangers like him so much they already signed the veteran blueliner to a shiny new extension.
Borgen, 28, signed a five year deal worth $20.5 million. The former Kraken defenseman was previously scheduled to hit restricted free agency after this season but instead will carry a $4.1 million AAV on his new deal.
The former Buffalo Sabres draft pick in 2015 called the recent extension with the Rangers a ‘no brainer’.
“It was a no-brainer for me,” Borgen said. “I’ve had nothing but a good time here so far. It’s very fun hockey to play. The team is doing well. Once I got settled into a spot and got used to the group I felt more comfortable and I’ve enjoyed it.”
Not to be that guy but Borgen made the right call by signing this deal. I get that the cap is going up but this was an overpay and a steep price to pay for a third pair defenseman. With the Kraken, Borgen was a total disaster and close to unplayable.
Borgen has played much better during his brief stint with the Rangers but it’s also an incredibly small sample size. In roughly 18 minutes per night, Borgen has two goals and three assists through 20 games. He’s also a -14 on the season including his time with the Kraken.
$4.1 million for the next five years for a limited D is a high price to pay. Especially when you consider that Chris Drury was a total prick trying to move out Jacob Trouba. Will Drury do the same with Borgen he needs to clear cap space two years from now?
