The Minnesota Wild are shaking up their D core. The Wild are trading offense for defense while giving up on a young player with some promise all at the same time. Calen Addison is out. Zach Bogosian is in. Let’s break it all down.
Kevin Weekes at ESPN was on top of this story. I’ll share his two tweets below. Addison will head to San Jose for a 5th round pick. Tampa will then trade Bogosian to Minnesota for a 7th rounder. Weekes’ has the best videos so I always enjoy sharing his stuff when he breaks news.
Let’s start with Addison first.
Addison can really move the puck but he’s not good defensively. Minnesota has been playing him in sheltered minutes while also giving him to operate in the man advantage. With the Sharks, expect his minutes to sky rocket. We’re about to find out if Addison can become a well rounded player instead of a third pair puck mover. The Sharks are terrible so it’s not a terrible gamble to find out if more is in the tank.
I’m curious to see who will be given the chance to run the powerplay in Minnesota. Are they actually ready to unleash Brock Faber? For those who remember, Faber was the key piece in the Kevin Fiala trade and probably should get that opportunity.
Bogosian doesn’t have much tread left on the tires. He’s there to be a grinder. Clearly Minnesota felt they were better served adding Bogosian to the lineup over Addison. We’ll see if that proves to be true. It also doesn’t seem like Tampa minded parting with Bogosian. They scratched him during some playoffs games a year ago. They may want to give other players an opportunity in his spot.
