Why the Michigan Wolverines will win the 2024 National Championship

Another year, another Michigan Wolverines college football playoff berth. The Wolverines are headed back to the college football playoff semifinal for the third year in a row, and with the Alabama Crimson Tide standing in front of them for a trip to the championship, the Wolverines will have to give it their all.

We’ve done it for Alabama and Texas, so now let’s break down why Michigan will win the 2024 National Championship.

After a crucial Georgia Bulldogs loss to Alabama in the SEC championship, Michigan collected the No. 1 seed in the College Football Playoff rankings. With that win, the Crimson Tide are set to have a date with the 11-time national champions.

Michigan has been the team to beat all season long outside of Georgia. With another reputable season, Michigan finished the 2023-24 season with a 13-0 regular season record, beating three top 20 opponents (Penn State, Ohio State, and Iowa) by a combined 41 points. The Big Ten champions have relied heavily on the shoulders of J.J. McCarthy, Blake Corum and their defense.

McCarthy has swayed the hearts of Michigan fans across the world. After becoming the full-time starter his sophomore year, the Wolverines haven’t looked back. In two years as a starter, the Illinois native has posted 41 passing touchdowns while only throwing nine interceptions. This season, the game-managing Michigan commander-in-chief has done exactly what he needs to do. Don’t turn the ball over, manage the game, and hand that ball off to Blake Corum.

Similar to last year, Corum has been the star of the Michigan offense. Rumbling for almost 1,100 yards and an astonishing 24 rushing touchdowns. In his three years as the starting running back with the blue and gold, Corum has totaled up 55 rushing touchdowns and over 3,500 rushing yards.

The Wolverines’ offense has been lackluster in the passing game this season, but their defense is another story, holding opponents to an average of 152.6 passing yards per game, the second-best mark in the country. But their passing defense isn’t the only stellar aspect of their defense: Michigan’s run defense with its front seven is on the same level.

Coming in at sixth in the country, the Wolverines allow just under 90 rushing yards per game (87.1). But, in their last three games, Michigan’s run-stopping crew has been even more exceptional, allowing opponents to only 52.3 rushing yards per game. With the run-heavy quarterback Jalen Milroe facing off against Michigan, the Wolverines need to maintain their stellar run defense.

Michigan has the poise and promise this season to make a break in their semifinal curse finally. If the Wolverines can fend off Michigan, they have a promising chance to win it all.
