We’re only days away from the College Football Playoff, and with the Alabama Crimson Tide edging into the playoff once again in controversial fashion, let’s break down by the Crimson Tide will be crowned National Champions once again.
Alabama has had a long and hard-fought ride this entire season, starting the season off shaky with a 1-1 record and a loss to a fellow CFP team; the Texas Longhorns. Following close wins over South Florida, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, Arkansas and a miracle victory over the Auburn Tigers, this Nick Saban-led team has thrived on the shoulders of quarterback Jalen Milroe and improvement.
Milroe drew question marks heading into the 2023 season on whether he can truly lead a team like Alabama to a successful season. After briefly appearing in nine games last season, Milroe threw for five touchdowns and three interceptions on 52 attempts. The Katy, Texas, native also added on 263 rushing yards and one score on 31 carries.
In his first three games this season, Milroe threw for six touchdowns and three interceptions against mid-tier competition. But with all Nick Saban-led teams, those three games haven’t defined the teams or Milroe’s season. The sophomore quarterback has been on an absolute tear since being benched in Week 3 against South Florida, showing off his running capability and poise. In the following 10 games, he threw for 18 touchdowns to four interceptions and ran in 10 additional scores.
Alabama obviously hasn’t had the prettiest year this season, but their record speaks for itself. Their defense has come to play the entire season, holding explosive offenses like Ole Miss, Tennessee, LSU and Georgia to an average of 20.5 points per game.
But even with an above-average defense, Alabama’s run defense has been lackluster this season, dipping to No. 31 in rushing yards given up to opponents (124.4) this season. Their matchup, Michigan, isn’t the most favorable draw for the Crimson Tide, as senior running back Blake Corum will be commanding the ball the entire game.
If the Crimson Tide wants to prove the doubters once more, stopping Corum is their top priority. Corum has been no surprise for the Michigan Wolverines this season. Turning over another monstrous season stat-line in 2023, rushing for 1,028 yards with an astonishing 24 touchdowns.
If Alabama wants to win the National Championship, their play is heading straight through Jalen Milroe and Nick Saban. If there is any coach and team you don’t want to face in the CFP, it’s the Alabama Crimson Tide.
