Who Should Alabama Start At Quarterback In 2023?

Who should Alabama start at quarterback in 2023? It’s not exactly a list that inspires confidence after Bryce Young departed for the NFL.

Who Should Alabama Start At Quarterback In 2023?

Nick Saban is basically begging one of these quarterbacks to take the job. He’s basically blasted all of them in the media. With that said, the Crimson Tide have to start someone. Who should Bama start at the quarterback position in 2023?

Dylan Lonergan

Lonergan is the long term play at the position but probably won’t be a factor this year. If Saban wouldn’t play Tua Tagovailoa as a true freshman, then Lonergan isn’t getting game action until very, very late into the season as a best case scenario.

Lonergan, a four star recruit during the most recent recruiting cycle, has looked good in camp. Just not sure you can count on a true freshman to get through the riggers of an SEC schedule.

Ty Simpson

Simpson, a five star during the 2022 cycle, just continues to fail at seizing the job for himself. At this point, the former five star rating doesn’t feel accurate. It’s hard to imagine he’s as good as Cade Klubnik, Quinn Ewers, Drew Allar, or Conner Weigman.

I just think if Simpson was going to win the job, it would have already happened. Does Buchner transfer in if they had confidence Simpson was the guy?

Tyler Buchner

Buchner, the Notre Dame transfer, actually has game tape we can evaluate. As a freshman in 2021, he was terrible and then got hurt. In 2022, he got hurt again and was mostly terrible outside of some flashes in the Bowl game.

Buchner is only here because Tommy Rees is the coordinator. He’s really frail and doesn’t have a big arm either. I just don’t see Buchner as ever being a real NFL quarterback. Honestly, I was shocked when he transferred there cause I’m not sure he’s SEC caliber either.

Jalen Milroe

As weird as it sounds, I think Jalen Milroe has to start out of default. It’s not ideal but Alabama has the clearest pathway to win a National Title with Milroe under center. This overall roster is really good. You just need a quarterback that won’t screw it up.

Milroe’s rushing ability probably sets him apart in the competition. This is a Bama team that can probably run the football 50 times a game and win. The offensive line might be the best unit in the country. They have a hoard of running backs that can all play. If Milroe can do damage on the ground and improve as a passer as the season progresses, it may be Bama’s best bet.
