Who will be competing in the 2025 NBA 3-point contest?

The 2024-25 All-Star Break has officially arrived! While the weekend has become a laughing stock, the 3-point contest has turned into arguably the best event the weekend has to offer. Who will be the eight participants this year? Let’s dive into it!

Jalen Brunson, G, New York Knicks:

Brunson, 28, has been one of the NBA’s most proficient long-range shooters over the last five years, canning 40.0 percent of his 4.7 triple tries over that span. He finished with the eighth-most made triples a year ago and is 34th through 53 games this year, though he’s 11th (of 38) in 3-point percentage of players who have made at least 120 triples.

Cade Cunningham, G, Detroit Pistons:

Cunningham is the least efficient of the bunch from deep, shooting only 35.1 percent from 3-point range on a career-most 6.3 3-point attempts per game. He’s been one of the NBA’s most improved players and best all-around guards this season. He’s averaging 25.4 points, 6.3 rebounds and 9.4 assists on 45.5 percent shooting and 55.1 percent true shooting. The 23-year-old is the biggest reason why Detroit is already doubling (29) last year’s win total (14).

Darius Garland, G, Cleveland Cavaliers:

Garland, 25, is having his best shooting season to date. He’s currently 10th in made 3-pointers and No. 9 in 3-point efficiency at 43.1 percent, 2.1 percentage points better than his previous career high and nearly five points greater than his career long-range clip (38.4) heading into this season. Oh, and remember that stat I shared about Brunson’s 3-point percentage with at least 120 makes? Garland’s 43.1 percent leads all players.

Tyler Herro, G, Miami Heat:

Herro, 25, has been the Heat’s best player through their first 53 games, averaging 23.9 points, 5.5 rebounds and 5.5 assists on 38.0 percent shooting from deep. His 3-point percentage has recently taken a dip, but he’s fourth in made triples from deep while taking nearly 55 percent of his attempts from distance.

Buddy Hield, G, Golden State Warriors

Buddy Buckets! His 3-point percentage recently dipped to 36.3 percent after a few poor shooting outings this week. That would be the worst mark of his career. He’s still one of the best shooters of this generation (his teammate Stephen Curry is the best; ever heard of him?) and has finished No. 2 in made 3s in four of his previous five seasons.

Cameron Johnson, F, Brooklyn Nets

Johnson, who turns 29-years-old in March, is the only non-guard in the 3-point contest. He’s having one of the best shooting seasons of his career with the highest volume he’s received, averaging a career-best 19.1 points on 41.3 percent shooting from beyond the arc. He’s always been a high-volume long-range threat, but Johnson’s usage is a career-most 22.4 percent. Maintaining his efficiency despite having an increased role is very impressive.

Damian Lillard, G, Milwaukee Bucks:

Lillard, one of the best shooters of his generation, has a chance to make history Saturday night. He’s won back-to-back 3-point contests and is looking to become the first player since 1992 to win three straight. Only Larry Bird and Craig Hodges has done that. He’s a certified sniper. Will be able to accomplish that feat?

Norman Powell, G, Los Angeles Clippers:

Powell has been another one of the NBA’s most improved players. He’s always been a volume 3-point threat, but the 31-year-old is 15th in total long-range makes (151)–canning them at a remarkable 42.8 percent clip. He’s shot 41.9 percent from deep on 5.2 3-point attempts since the start of 2018-19–paired with high-level versatile defense.

Prediction: Buddy Hield
