There have been questions over the years with star military branched NFL talents and when they serve their duty. Well, in this year’s draft there is a star, and his name is Andre Carter II.
Carter is a pass rusher out of Army. But when will he serve? Now? In the future? I’m going to tell you when exactly this young soldier will be on his other line of duty, via PFT.
Carter is a beast, to say the least. At Army, he put up a total of 19.5 sacks in three seasons with the Black Knights. He posted five forced fumbles, two interceptions, and 95 total tackles across his career. Not to mention that he is built like a tank. Carter is six foot seven and 260 pounds. They built him differently.
Carter wasn’t sure he would be able to pursue his NFL dreams straight out of college, as the federal government had policies on serving active duty right out of graduation. According to PFT, they once slated for him to serve five years in active duty before he could go to the NFL.
But now things have changed happily for the young man out of Missouri City, Texas. Carter will be able to turn pro before serving in the Army after his NFL career.
“You basically delay your service commitment until you’re done playing in the NFL, then you’ll go five years of active duty and three years in the reserves,” Carter said Wednesday on PFT Live.
It will be exciting to see these military branch schools be able to showcase their talent in the NFL going forward. The NFL has seen many military branch players like Roger Staubach, Ed Sprinkle, and recently, Alejandro Villanueva transform into legends. I hope we can see Carter in the midst of those names one day.
