What Does Matt Patricia Returning To New England Mean For The Future?

Things appear to be coming to an interesting head in Foxborough. Rather than rejoining the New England Patriots as a Defensive Coordinator, Matt Patricia has been named to what NBC Sports calls the Dwight Schrute to Bill Belichick’s Michael Scott. As a special assistant to the head coach, Patricia has been following around and assisting Belichick around for a variety of duties. Whether it’s helping players during OTA’s, giving advice and expertise to the Patriots’ draft room, or any other responsibilities, there is definitely more than meets the eye here. At age 69, we all know that Belichick will eventually retire and take his place in the Hall of Fame. Once that happens, there will be many vying for power in the vacuum that ensues. Along with Patricia, Offensive Coordinator Josh McDaniels and two of Bill’s sons appear as prime candidates to take up roles in the new regime.

It is worth noting that the former Lions’ Head Coach remains in very good standing in New England, and was an important part to multiple Super Bowl victories under Brady and Belichick. During his head coaching interview with the Los Angeles Rams back in 2017, they came away with the impression that Patricia would be better suited as a General Manager rather than as a coach. Regardless, it goes to show that he will be ready and able to assume a variety of roles in the post-Belichick Patriots. Regardless of who’s in charge, a pretty important season is in the works for 2021. There is hope a true heir to Tom Brady’s throne can be found this season, while Belichick and company are looking to be more competitive in the AFC East than in their underwhelming 2020 campaign.
