Whilst sports betting always comes down to chance in the end, there are certainly some showdowns which can be a little easier to forecast than others. After all, each individual sporting activity carries with it a unique combination of rules, traditions, and quirks that all affect the likelihood of different outcomes, making the experience of placing a bet unique to every sport. In this article, we’ve highlighted some of the hardest sports to bet on and taken a closer look at what exactly makes them so unpredictable.
Boxing and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA)
When it comes to making accurate predictions, boxing and mixed martial arts (MMA) events are notorious for being particularly tricky to pin down. These fast-paced and chaotic combat sports can be hugely unpredictable, meaning that, unfortunately, no amount of background research can ever truly help you to make the right call. The world of boxing and MMA is always full of surprises, and whilst this makes it a fantastic source of suspenseful entertainment, it doesn’t exactly help with placing a solid bet. All it takes is one wrong move to create a dramatic result, and often just one knockout blow changes everything. Combat sports, including the latest major UFC events, are also famed for featuring plenty of controversial and highly subjective judging decisions, so overall, it’s a challenging arena for those looking to place a bet.
Golf
Whilst it’s a beloved sport around the world, golf is not exactly a favorite amongst fans of sports betting, and for good reason. This hugely variable sport makes it enormously difficult to make solid predictions, since there are always so many different opportunities and hurdles along the way for each individual player. Much of this unpredictability can be attributed to Mother Nature, since it is certainly one of the most weather-dependent sports out there today, with an unexpected change of wind direction sometimes making all the difference. No two courses are the same, and each has its own uniquely challenging terrain, meaning that a high level of understanding is required in order to make an informed bet. On top of all this, many major golf tournaments have huge fields of over 100 players, making it almost impossible to pick out the likeliest winner. If you’re still game to bet on golf, we’re impressed.
Soccer (Football)
Soccer (or football as it is otherwise known) can often be one of the hardest sports to bet on because of its typically low-scoring nature. Major league matches regularly end with just one goal scored, and very frequently in a draw, which complicates the standard betting approach and makes each outcome particularly precarious. Despite this, soccer fans around the world still enjoy placing bets on the chances of their favorite team, as the difficulty of betting on soccer arguably makes it even more exciting when it pays off. The introduction of VAR (video assistant referee) technology into some major leagues may have helped things along by improving the consistency of decision-making in the sport; however, this is still a hugely fickle game, featuring earth-shatteringly dramatic upsets and highly unexpected results. It can be seriously fun to bet on soccer, but the results of any given match are always far from predictable.
Tennis
It’s undoubtedly one of the world’s most enjoyable and accessible sports, but tennis can be another seriously tough one to call. The highly individualized nature of this game means that whilst physical prowess is vital for success, mental fortitude also plays a pivotal role in every player’s ultimate performance. Things can get pretty emotional out there on the court, and it has become common to see angry outbursts and tearful tennis moments from most leading players along the way. Having a clear head and an unwavering focus is therefore vital for those seeking a Grand Slam win, whilst for bettors, it’s not exactly easy to know how any given individual will perform on match day. Alongside this uncertain and highly emotional side to the sport, injuries are also unfortunately pretty common in tennis, and are of course impossible to predict. Whilst this adds to the thrill of the game, it definitely makes tennis one of the hardest sports to bet on today.
Baseball
Lastly, let’s talk about baseball. Whilst some people do claim to have this one figured out, most sports bettors would probably agree that we’ve saved the hardest for last. The random, multi-faceted nature of this enormously popular sport makes it a mathematical nightmare with all the classic statistical rules thrown out of the window entirely, and with such a massive number of games in every season, it is surely impossible to ever get baseball totally right. Of course, the chaos and craziness of each game is what makes the sport so truly fun, with endless near-impossible outcomes, and plenty of unlikely winners finding their time to shine on the pitch. For fans of sports betting, however, baseball is a real slippery slope, and most tend to avoid placing risky bets on this particular sporting showdown. Whilst the pay-off from calling an unlikely outcome could be a huge thrill, betting on baseball is certainly not for the faint-hearted.
Ultimately, whilst it’s obviously impossible to ever truly predict the future, some sports are undeniably harder to bet on than others. Typically, the activities that feature a high number of variables are the toughest to predict, meaning that complex major games like baseball, golf, and soccer pose an enormous challenge to bettors all around the world. Highly individual showdowns, including boxing and tennis matches, are also notoriously tricky to forecast, as the unique characteristics, emotions, and personal choices of each competitor have a huge influence on the outcome on any given day. Some people love a challenge, so you don’t need to avoid these sports entirely – you just need to stay informed and always make careful decisions if you do choose to bet on these notoriously tricky events. After all, their unpredictable nature is what makes these sports so fun to watch!
