Watch: Maximum Football 23 Announcement Trailer Drops

The Maximum Football series of games has been, since its inception in 2005, a second-string quarterback to the juggernaut that is Madden. However, the drop of a new announcement trailer by development team Modus Games on Feb. 7 shows that the devs are definitely trying to turn the playbook on its head.

Features

The new trailer highlights several of the features the new game has to offer. Including enhanced graphics, something that was criticized in the franchise’s last iteration Maximum Football 2020. The game also features modes like dynasty, enhanced customization, “physics-based tackles,” and most important of all, an online multiplayer mode.

Then there is also the fact that the game will be free to play. Whether or not this will be a good thing for the game is up for debate, but it’s clear Modus Games wants to change the opinions of the franchise around.

A Rough First Half

The Maximum Football franchise was started to be a rival to Madden that featured modes for not just NFL rules of play, but also options for both college and the often-overlooked Canadian Football League, with the modern iteration of the franchises having three previous titles beginning in 2018.

However, the series long suffered dated visuals, limited content and overpricing. It was clear to many that the supposed rival to Madden just wasn’t that. The lack of official licensed NFL or CFL teams didn’t help either.

Then in 2021, the series was bought by Modus Games, who have gone on to develop the current title, promising to not only improve on the features that worked in the previous titles, but to fix the issues the previous games had.

An Optimistic Second Half

Right now, Maximum Football 23 looks promising, with the trailer ensuring a release date in autumn of this year to both consoles and PC. Perhaps this time the series will start, as opposed to being just the backup.
