Oklahoma has landed one of the biggest players in the transfer portal in QB John Mateer. The red-shirt sophomore just finished his third season at Washington State. This season was his first season as a starting quarterback and he delivered in every single way. Mateer finished the season with 3,139 passing yards and a 27:9 TD-to-interception ratio. Also, the dual-threat QB added 826 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns on the ground. Now, he will make a big jump into SEC play as he joins the Oklahoma Sooners.
Mateer did a lot at Washington State this season including having them ranked as high as 18 at one point in the season. The type of talent and success he had on the field is probably what led to him being the number one-ranked transfer player according to 247 Sports. However, it was debated if John Mateer would enter the transfer portal after his breakout season. Obliviously, it is clear the young QB is following his offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle after the coach took the offensive coordinator job at Oklahoma.
The 2025 season will be an important season for Oklahoma in many ways. Head coach Brent Venables might be on the hot seat after a 22-16 record in three years at Oklahoma. Also, it will be Oklahoma’s second year in the SEC so they will look for redemption after going 2-6 in conference play. The Sooners struggled with quarterback play and former QB Jackson Arnold has now transferred to Auburn. Now, John Mateer will have a great opportunity to lead Oklahoma to some success in 2025. It will be interesting to see if Mateer and Arbuckle can duplicate their success in the SEC.
