The Jimmy Butler trade saga is over. The Miami Heat will send Butler to the Golden State Warriors in exchange for Andrew Wiggins, Dennis Schroder, Kyle Anderson, and the Warriors 2025 first-round pick with top-ten protection. ESPN NBA Insider Shams Charania first reported the news.
The Warriors and Heat brought in multiple other organizations to create a larger multi-team trade. The Heat immediately routed Schroder to the Utah Jazz for P.J. Tucker a second-round pick. The Detroit Pistons will receive Lindy Waters III and Josh Richardson. The Warriors will send the Pistons a second-round pick for taking on salaries, according to Detroit Free Press Pistons Beat Writer Omari Sankofa II.
The Pistons ending up being the final landing spot for Schroder. The deal was adjusted on Thursday afternoon to send the German to Detroit.
The final moving piece of the deal is that Anderson was originally supposed to be sent to the Toronto Raptors, but that portion of the deal fell through. Anderson will remain in Miami for now; however, the Heat are working to ship him to another team.
The catch that came alongside trading for Butler was his contract. The Warriors quickly addressed that issue. The two sides agreed to a two-year extension that will pay Butler $121 million. Butler declined his 2025-26 player option to facilitate the extension.
The focal point of the deal is the Warriors swapping Wiggins for Butler. The upgrade should increase the team’s ceiling for Butler’s three seasons on the roster. The goal will be to take some of the team’s offensive creation off of Stephen Curry‘s plate while providing quality defense. It should also be noted that Butler’s off-ball movement is an asset in the Warrior’s offense.
This deal will also unite the Warrior’s timeline. The team’s three biggest stars are all in the same portion of their career. Curry is 36 years old, Butler is 35 years old, and Draymond Green is 34 years old. Additionally, the trio will all be under contract through the 2026-27 season.
On the Miami side of the equation, it is a positive to get Butler off the roster. The drama involving the two sides became a black cloud over the organization. In all likelihood, Butler would have walked for nothing in free agency. It should be viewed as a success that they walked out with Wiggins and a first-round pick.
