The Vikings have decided to keep Aaron Jones in Minnesota a little longer. Signing him to a two-year extension worth $20 million, $13 of which is guaranteed. ESPN Insider Adam Schefter was the first to report the news.
Jones seemingly found a home in Minnesota this past year. Rushing for a career high 1138 yards as well as 408 receiving yards. It wasn’t all perfect for Aaron Jones though. He struggled holding onto the ball, tying his career high of five fumbles.
He also found the endzone seven times, which has been pretty consistent since the 2020 season, when he scored 11 times. But if Jones can work on hanging onto the ball more, I think he can continue to be a vital piece to this Vikings offense.
For the Vikings I don’t mind the contract. Yeah Jones is 30, but he more than proved he still has some gas in the tank. So, a two-year contract in my mind is perfect for a guy like Aaron Jones at this point in his career.
Minnesota also has a lot of cap space right now, so you can afford to make these kinds of deals. Sure, they still have a decision to make on Sam Darnold. But even if they do decide to give Darnold big money, which seems to be the likely outcome at this point, they still have some money to go out and improve this team.
Justin Jefferson is already locked up, so for the Vikings, it’s just about figuring out who they want at quarterback going into next season.
Will Sam Darnold suit up in purple and gold next year, or will J.J. McCarthy be handed the reins? More so, what other moves will the Vikings make to improve their roster?
Free agency starts on the 12th, and the Vikings will surely be aggressive with over $63 million available in cap. But bringing back a guy like Aaron Jones on a relatively cheap contract like this is a good start.
Running back value has been all over the place recently. But with a team like the Vikings, who are so close to completing that puzzle, keeping a high-level back like Jones while you’re in your window just makes sense to me.
Retaining Aaron Jones certainly won’t be the move that gets the Vikings to the Super Bowl. But for now, it’s a step in the right direction and ensures they don’t have another hole to address going into this offseason.
