San Antonio Spurs superstar Victor Wembanyama will miss the rest of the 2024-25 season with a “deep vein thrombosis” in right shoulder, ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania first reported Thursday.
In Laymen’s terms, Wembanyama was diagnosed with a blood clot in his right shoulder; according to Charania, the Spurs “believe this is an isolated condition.”
I’m obviously not a doctor, but any professional athlete–or any human, for that matter–getting diagnosed with any sort of blood clot is very scary. Blood clots, unfortunately, ended Chris Bosh’s career prematurely back in 2016 when they traveled through his lungs after originally dealing with them in his calf.
According to Dr. Evan Jeffries, DPT, who subtweeted Charania, Wembanyana will need to be on blood thinners for at least three months. He also stressed the importance of making sure the clot does not travel to the heart, lungs or brain, which can be life-threatening.
At this current time, I would trust his opinion over anyone else’s. This is obviously a very scary situation for Wembanyama, who is coming off his first All-Star Game appearance.
The Spurs are currently 23-29 and are 3.5 games out of the 10th and final play-in spot in the Western Conference with 30 games left.
