The NHL Winter Classic is back again! This year the NHL’s two newest teams, the Las Vegas Golden Knights and Seattle Kraken, are facing off at T-Mobile Park on New Year’s Day. The jerseys for the event were unveiled Wednesday, so let’s talk about it!
The design of these jerseys comes from a combination of the NHL and their jersey sponsor: Adidas. Obviously, these teams are young and they don’t have much history in the NHL. So, the league and Adidas combined a look of the 1910s and 1920s but combined it with a more modern touch.
“It’s a challenge to design products around these events that really come across as being authentic because it’s not just for the players but we’re really talking about the fans,” Nic Corbett, director of sports marketing and hockey at Adidas, said. “They have to recognize Las Vegas or the Kraken when fans see these jerseys, and we believe that they will. We’re excited to hear what the conversation from the fans will be around these jerseys, because we know that the players are excited about them.”
First impressions of these jerseys. Oh my gosh. I know the Utah Jazz recently debuted these Kraken jerseys already, but these are amazing. The stripes and red logo contrast great. Combining that with the grey touch on the middle and lower strands, these jerseys are gold.
On the other hand, I feel like the Golden Knights jerseys are alright, but something is missing. I like the idea of the jerseys, but it feels so boring.
Vegas is supposed to be alive and fun, but it just seems like someone spent 10 minutes on these. The crest in the middle is a nice touch along with the numbers and captains patch, but other than that, it’s just flat-out plain. There could’ve been another color added to this jersey or stripes like what Seattle did. There is just so much empty space across this jersey.
