UFC 264 is quickly approaching and with it comes one of the most highly anticipated rematches of all time. Dustin Poirier vs. Conor McGregor 3 headlines this blockbuster card, so what will Poirier’s future look like if he wins?
It is simple really. If Poirier wins he automatically fights for a title. There will be no denying Poirier a chance at the belt if he can beat McGregor for a second straight time. A lot of casual MMA fans might only know Poirier for his wins over The Double Champ, but his resume is far more extensive than that. His only loss in the last four years has come at the hands of the greatest lightweight of all time, Khabib Nurmagamedov. Since 2017, Poirier has secured wins over Dan Hooker, Max Holloway, Anthony Pettis, Eddie Alvarez, and Justin Gaethje. Almost every man I just named was either in his prime or just leaving his prime at the time Poirier beat them.
In short, he has the style, resume, power, and overall fanfare to be the undisputed champion of the world. Realistically, Poirier should have been given another title shot after losing to Khabib, but I doubt he would have an issue fighting Charles Oliveira for the belt if he can stop McGregor again. His complete set of skills gives him a great shot at beating any person on the 155 roster. All of this is merely conjecture, of course, because Poirier has a tough task ahead of him on July 10th. No matter who wins, expect a great fight from start to finish when The Diamond and The Double Champ face off on Saturday night.
